Earlier this month I had the opportunity to attend Doble Engineerings
80th International Users Conference in Boston, in which 1300 utility
executives from 35 countries gathered to trade experiences, attend
workshops, and see the newest utility testing gear from Doble (A
subsidiary of ESCO Technologies). This was a good opportunity for me to
talk to various utility execs and find out what was on their minds.
One
of the keynote speakers was B.C Hydros Patrick Hogan, Vice President of
Transmission and Distribution Engineering and Design. His job, simply
put, is to make sure electricity gets from the generation stations to
the homes, stores, and factories that use it.
At one point in
his presentation, Hogan alluded to the value of smart utility meters in
preventing theft, so of course I had to follow up on this. I had read
that electricity theft in a country like India might result in a loss of
up to a third of the power generated, but I figured it would be no more
than a couple percent in any utility jurisdiction in North America.
It
turns out that B.C. Hydro may be losing up to 3% of its electrons to
theft. An excerpt from BC Hydros smart metering & infrastructure
business case states:
Legitimate customers bear the cost of
electricity theft, which has grown significantly from approximately 500
GWh (gigawatt-hours) in 2006 to an estimate of at least 850 GWh
todaythats enough power to supply 77,000 homes for a year and amounts to
approximately $100 million a year in energy cost.
Although BC
Hydro has identified over 2,600 electricity thefts over the past five
years, identifying and confirming theft is a time-consuming, inefficient
and expensive manual process. While BC Hydro cannot reasonably expect
to eliminate all electricity theft, augmenting the current manual
process with new technology will substantially reduce current levels of
theft by:
Theft detectionNew distribution system meters
(different from those to be installed at customer homes or businesses)
located at key points on BC Hydros system will measure electricity
supplied to specific areas Combined with software tools to enable
electricity balancing analysis, distribution system meters will help BC
Hydro identify electricity theft more accurately and address it more

Tamper
detection Smart meters have a tamper detection feature that
automatically notifies BC Hydro if they have been removed from the wall
or otherwise manipulated. Electricity theft results in higher rates for
legitimate customers.
According to Hogan We dont know where it
all goes, but we do know the majority goes to growing marijuana. And the
thieves are not amateurs. They tap into 12 kV or 25 kV lines. These
people have utility lineman experience. They also have a great deal of
ingenuity. Weve seen where they hollowed out the utility poles, tapped
into the power line, and then ran underground to their operation. They
even put in their own transformers. Smart meters can help put a stop to
that, because we have a better sense of where the power is going and
when it is used.
In response to the issue,Find a great selection of customkeychain
deals. BC Hydro has set up an anonymous tip line, and the promise that
if a tip leads to arrest and trial, the informant doesnt have to appear
in court. The utility also has its own team of ex law enforcement
officials who pursue thieves. Within three years, they had shut down
over 1500 electrical diversions associated with grow ops and recovered
$5 million in lost revenue. The utility also responds to over 5000
police requests a year for utility usage information C that information
often shows unusually high electricity consumption and usage patterns
that indicate use of energy intensive grow lights and fans.
In
British Columbia, much of this cultivation is moving to rural areas, but
in other areas of Canada, its very much an urban phenomenon. An
estimated $500 million of electricity is stolen in Ontario, in more
urban areas. Across the country, there may be as many as 100,000 indoor
grow-ops.
But if you think the problem of electricity theft is
limited to Canada, think again. Estimates are hard to come by, but it is
believed that up to $6 billion of electricity is pirated in the U.S.,
which would put electricity high on the list, as the third most stolen
item, after credit card data and automobiles.
Its not all stolen
for pot growing: In Houston in 2010, with the heat wave, power theft
was epidemic. Law enforcement in that city was quoted as saying: We can
go to almost any apartment complex in the city and after looking at two
or three buildings, we can find probably at least 60 to 70 percent of
the meters have been tampered with. In Houston alone an estimated 10,000
customers were stealing power. Total costs to Houston ratepayers were
estimated at $14 million.

electric and gas customers headquartered in Houston. Ms. Neel estimated
the problem there to be about 1% of total electric load, and about 2% of

Like
BC Hydro, CenterPoint has a special unit to focus on revenue

meter. We know it immediately, whereas in the old days, we might not
know for months. That helps protect us from lost revenue.
CenterPoints
revenue protection unit is also charged with going to the scenes where
theft has taken place, and gathering evidence for potential prosecution.
Neel notes that this job can be risky, since a good portion of this
stolen electricity is believe to support marijuana grow-ops. The grow-op
people tend to be more creative in stealing power. Since our main job
is to protect our employees, if we do go out to ascertain a potential
grow-op situation, we have law enforcement accompany us.
To
combat this problem, CenterPoint also works with other Texas utilities
who meet once a year to share best practices in revenue protection. They
also share information with a larger group of Southwestern utilities.
Electricity
theft is a significant economic issue that is by no means limited to
CenterPoint in Houston, or British Columbias B.C. Hydro. It is pervasive
throughout North America, and across the planet, for that matter.When

concede that it continues to be a significant concern. And while smart
meters can help, there have been some reports of hacking into the smart

“If, as some are forecasting, Apple’s device sales are disappointing, the very worst thing the company could do is double down on device innovation. One definition of madness is to repeat what you have done historically and hope for a different result.”
“Apple in our view is a business going through a necessary transition from hardware as the dominant revenue stream. The right thing for Apple to do is to broaden themselves out, serve their huge community of credit card enabled customers, and focus on micropayments and software.”
“The world now is awash with device innovation. Devices are of course a fundamental part of Apple’s offer and will remain so. The point is that the device market is now hugely competitive and Apple should focus on simply being competitive – or good enough in other words. What is needed is a balanced approach in the business.”

Restoring its health

The 2005 Recommendations were similar, with the addition of the DWQ working with Burlington and Graham stormwater programs to reduce further impacts due to new development and to implement (best management practices) and restore the instream habitat in Little Alamance Creek.
In 2006, the Piedmont Triad Council of Governments partnered with Ecosystem, a state government initiative, to conduct a water quality assessment on the creeks impacts and watershed requirements throughout the area.

The two cities invited local service groups, youth groups and residents to participate in the Stream Side Cleanup of Bowden Branch, which was sponsored by Elon Universitys Lambda Chi Alpha chapter.
With reductions in pollutant loading, sedimentation and stream erosions, Little Alamance Creek may be able to return to a healthy state. It will be important to note every small improvement, Division of Water Quality spokeswoman Susan Massengale said.
But, the road to recovery for Little Alamance Creek will be long. It will last several permit cycles, each of which is five years. Stecker said she estimates the process to take 10 to 20 years. There is a very small chance the creek will ever return to its original state.
State officials will not return to test the waters of Little Alamance Creek until they know the cities of Burlington and Graham or the Department of Transportation have done something that would change the waters quality. These three groups are all working to make sure the biological integrity of Little Alamance Creek meets the aquatic standards.

Selecting Big Data Sources for Predictive Analytics
Why is big data valuable? Because its big? Not really. In fact, very
large datasets always come with a very large set of headaches. Storage,
maintenance and management of very large datasets is not simple. And
just having a lot of data doesnt guarantee a lot of value.
The value of any dataset is determined by the quality of information you can extract from it. The key to value in big data is the detail. In other words, the value of big data is in the small stuff.
Every business has a rough idea of how many customers it has, how much they spend in total, and perhaps the average spend per client. But if all you know is the average, then what are you going to do, treat every customer as average?
If you could meet each client personally, get to know each person, you wouldnt think of anyone as average. Youd know each persons habits. Youd know that Maria Perez shops for herself each week, and buys a gift now and then, while Laura Carter shops for her family of five, and Lily Yu does not use your products herself, but often purchases them for her parents. Youd know the times of day when each person prefers to shop, whether each is a relaxed or hurried shopper, and the products that each person prefers.
Because you would know your customers as individuals, you would treat them as individuals. Youd let Maria know that you offer gift wrapping. Youd direct Laura to the economical family-size package of her favorite product. Youd make sure that Lily chose the container that was easy for her parents to open.
The promise of big data is in the details. You want the data to give you the information youd get if you observed each customer in person. You want to know what each person does. How about the people who already do all their shopping during the quiet hours? Sterling Medical Building houses health care mixture

Michael Roney, managing broker of MLR Real Estate Services, says the building is already 70 per cent occupied after just four months. He oversees the Sterling ownership group, which is comprised mainly of medical professionals who are also tenants.
Its a credit to the physicians who have assisted with introducing me to other physicians, and to the hard work Colliers (leasing agent) has done, said Roney, noting the project has already attracted a number of out-of-town physicians and other medical professionals.

Designed by Vernons MQN Architects, the building site backs onto Vernon Creek, which proved a challenge with respect to riparian regulations. Since the creek is a fish-bearing stream, it triggered a report by Fisheries and Oceans Canada to establish setback requirements.
The states largest health care provider gave the Green Mountain Care Board a heads-up last week, since the power to issue a certificate of need for health care facilities was transferred to the board on Jan. 1. This project would allow us to integrate Fletcher Allen Partners system and will greatly improve the coordination of care so that were all working from the same platform or system, so that when our doctors leave Fletcher Allen and walk into Central Vermont Medical Center, theyll be walking into the same IT system, Keelty said.

Adam Lanza search warrants released
Police investigating the school massacre here seized a sizable
arsenal of firearms, knives and samurai swords along with medical
records and computer equipment from the 20-year-old gunman's home in the
days after the shootings, court documents released on Thursday reveal.
Also on Thursday, Connecticut State Attorney Stephen J. The documents50 pages of affidavits and evidence logs that include a list of items seized from the car and Newtown home Lanza shared with his mother, Nancypaint a chilling picture of a killer who had been stockpiling weapons in the weeks and months leading up to the Dec. 14 massacre.
But they do little to establish a motive for Lanza, who shot and killed his mother at their home before driving to the school, where he forced his way in and opened fire.

Lanza was also armed with a Glock 10 mm handgun, a 9 mm Sig Sauer P226 handgun and additional ammunition for both. Inside the car Lanza drove to the school, police found a 12-gauge shotgun and two magazines containing 70 rounds of ammunition. Lanza took his own life with the Glock as police were arriving at the school, the report states.
"There is no record of a member relationship between Newtown killer Adam Lanza, nor between Nancy Lanza ... with the National Rifle Association," spokesman Andrew Arulanandam wrote in a statement. "[Any] reporting to the contrary is reckless, false and defamatory."
Also according to the documents released on Thursday, FBI agents interviewed an unidentified resident who described Adam Lanza as a "shut in" and "avid gamer who plays Call of Duty" and rarely leaves the house. The witness said Lanza had a "gun safe containing at least four guns." Lanza had attended Sandy Hook Elementary School, the person told the FBI, and "that the school was Adam Lanza's 'life.'"
Superior Court Judge John Blawie ordered parts of the documents redacted after state prosecutors requested that the identity of a key witness not be revealed for another 90 days. The judge also approved blacking out some phone, credit card and serial numbers of some of the property confiscated from the Lanza home.
Connecticut State Police briefed family members of the Newtown shooting victims on Wednesday on what was recovered inside the Lanza home and car. About 50 family members attended the meeting, according to the Connecticut Post.
Thursday's release came after state lawmakers, media and Newtown residents criticized police officials for leaking details of their investigation at a convention of police chiefs in New Orleans in March. The details were then published by the New York Daily News.
"If state police officers can leak details of the Newtown investigation at conventions, surely that information can be shared with the Connecticut public," the Hartford Courant wrote in a recent editorial. "It has more of a right to know than out-of-state police chiefs do. ... This isn't information to be hoarded and shared only at the state police water cooler. The longer information is kept under wraps, the more questions there will be about why. But they do little to establish a motive for Lanza, who shot and killed his mother at their home before driving to the school, where he forced his way in and opened fire.

Lanza was also armed with a Glock 10 mm handgun, a 9 mm Sig Sauer P226 handgun and additional ammunition for both. Inside the car Lanza drove to the school, police found a 12-gauge shotgun and two magazines containing 70 rounds of ammunition. Lanza took his own life with the Glock as police were arriving at the school, the report states.
"There is no record of a member relationship between Newtown killer Adam Lanza, nor between Nancy Lanza ... with the National Rifle Association," spokesman Andrew Arulanandam wrote in a statement. "[Any] reporting to the contrary is reckless, false and defamatory."
Also according to the documents released on Thursday, FBI agents interviewed an unidentified resident who described Adam Lanza as a "shut in" and "avid gamer who plays Call of Duty" and rarely leaves the house. The witness said Lanza had a "gun safe containing at least four guns." Lanza had attended Sandy Hook Elementary School, the person told the FBI, and "that the school was Adam Lanza's 'life.'"
Superior Court Judge John Blawie ordered parts of the documents redacted after state prosecutors requested that the identity of a key witness not be revealed for another 90 days. The judge also approved blacking out some phone, credit card and serial numbers of some of the property confiscated from the Lanza home.
Connecticut State Police briefed family members of the Newtown shooting victims on Wednesday on what was recovered inside the Lanza home and car. About 50 family members attended the meeting, according to the Connecticut Post.
Thursday's release came after state lawmakers, media and Newtown residents criticized police officials for leaking details of their investigation at a convention of police chiefs in New Orleans in March. The details were then published by the New York Daily News.
"If state police officers can leak details of the Newtown investigation at conventions, surely that information can be shared with the Connecticut public," the Hartford Courant wrote in a recent editorial. "It has more of a right to know than out-of-state police chiefs do. ... This isn't information to be hoarded and shared only at the state police water cooler. The longer information is kept under wraps, the more questions there will be about why. Well, there's loads of different types of video game, yeah? So, if
you like a particular genre, why not check out something that works in a
vaguely similar fashion or attempts to emulate the same experience?
I've had a bit of a think and here's what I reckon you should be looking
for, boiled down into a few handy paragraphs. See how helpful I am?
Perhaps you're a fan of the First-Person Shooter (fps). You enjoy pumping bullets into humans and aliens and anything really, and thrill in the adrenaline rush you get from running about a lot doing killing is your thing. Of course, cardboard can't entirely recreate the experience C such games work at much too high a pace C but there are a few out there that not only try their best to do so; they're actually rather good.
For sheer speedy FPS action, you're best off hunting down a copy of Doom,When describing the location of the problematic howotipper. the boardgame based on the legendary shooter. It's incredibly straightforward, a total dicefest where you're looking to shoot anything that moves while trying to stay alive as long as possible.
For those who fancy an even simpler take on the genre, Frag from Steve Jackson Games may be a better bet (especially the Gold Edition which is a much nicer production) C this is pretty much a deathmatch on your table, but can take a little longer if more players are involved, outstaying its welcome somewhat.
The best selection? Gears of War. Yeah! Like the video game! Fantasy Flight took the license and put together an excellent game where you and your teammates actually have to work together in order to fight through hordes of monsters in order to complete missions.
It's card driven, meaning that you're only ever able to do what you've got in your hand. Combat is all down to dice rolls, so it's simple enough. You're playing co-operatively, so you either win or lose as a group. It comes with loads of plastic bits, characters and enemies taken straight from the screen... hell, it's even got a bloody cover system! Why wouldn't you want to play it?
What about you lot who love your fighters, who have every iteration of Street Fighter all the way back to the first coin-op where you had to hit pads to determine how hard your attacks were? For you, I present two games both set in the same universe: Yomi and Puzzle Strike.
Yomi is played with two decks of cards, each one representing a different character (there are ten available) and runs using a simple rock-paper-scissors system. You choose a card, reveal at the same time, work out who has damaged who and for how much, then keep going until someone's out of life. Special moves are included too, but in the same way that you can't spam them in a video game, you'll need to build up before pulling them off.
Puzzle Strike is a different beast, expanding gameplay from just two up to a maximum of four players. Drawing poker-style chips from a bag, you'll spend them in order to get bigger and better attacks that you can use on opponents. Successful ones will see them adding gem chips to their pile along the lines of Super Puzzle Fighter C get too many and they'll be knocked out of the round.
It's a very different game to its card-based sibling but offers an equally involving and entertaining time. Whichever of the two you choose though, they both evoke the spirit of battering lumps out of people.
Now for something more sedate. While you all weep openly at the mess that EA have created with the new version of SimCity, why not look at something like Suburbia or Power Grid to ease your sorrow? They're ideal choices,You can order besthandsfreeaccess cheap inside your parents. offering you the chance to either build your own little metropolis or look at things on a much grander scale as you create a network of power stations that spread across a continent.
Suburbia from Bezier Games is all about point scoring, contributing to the creation of a city alongside your fellow players while striving to make your little section the best. Spending money gets you tiles that are added to your little tableau that will increase your reputation and budget while also having an effect on other players. It's a very lovely game indeed and one of my favourites from 2012.
Power Grid, meanwhile,A group of families in a north Cork village are suing a bestplasticcard operator in a landmark case. happens to be one of the greatest games ever made (even though it sounds terribly dull). Starting off with bugger all money, you're looking to slowly build a network of cities that you will bring electricty to through clever purchasing of power stations. Of course, they won't work without the necessary coal, oil, rubbish or nuclear fuel, the prices of which will rise and fall as the game progresses. Throw in some auctions and the huge variety of beautifully balanced maps that are available and you've got a true gem. Consider your desire to manage stuff truly satisfied!
Next time, I'll give you some ideas for those who love their sports a little too much, those odd people for whom driving everywhere in real life simply isn't enough, and those who spend far too much time in Azeroth and it's surrounding territories. In the meantime, remain indoors, avoid all that snow and enjoy whatever you may play.
Supergiant's 2011 action-RPG Bastion made a lot of waves with its stunning art direction, procedural narration, and inventive approach to combat difficulty. It was clearly a game that wanted to rethink the isometric dungeon crawler rather than blindly follow in the footsteps of what came before. At a glance,You Can Find Comprehensive and in-Depth carparkmanagementsystem truck Descriptions. its follow-up, Transistor, looks content to simply do Bastion again with its familiar isometric perspective, colourful world and the gritty vocal chords of rising voice-acting superstar Logan Cunningham dropping cryptic bits of narration over a mysterious plot that slowly comes into focus.You can order besthandsfreeaccess cheap inside your parents.
Dig deeper, however, and it's clear that Supergiant wants to do something different with Transistor, even if the surface details remain the same. This time out you play as a fiery-haired singer named Red who gets whisked away to a backwater alley of the neon, art nouveau metropolis she inhabits. Shivering in her fancy gold dress, Red is unable to speak when she happens upon a glowing blue sword lying next to her dead friend. I'm told this man is someone very close to her and he died saving her life before he was slain by this otherworldly weapon, the titular Transistor. Upon picking up the peculiar electric blade, it begins talking to her in the voice of her dead companion.
Relative to Bastion, the narrator's role feels different. He's not a wizened old stranger but a long-time friend. This disembodied voice shows a lot of compassion for Red, and it's clear that these two were very close prior to the incident that left one of them a talking sword and the other hunted by strange robots that are after said sword for reasons unknown.

Florida's Promise
For 500 years, Europeans and their descendants have traveled to Florida from somewhere else. For many, this is a hopeful trip. Spring Breakers come for a week of debauchery; retirees come for golden years of warmth and sunshine and no more gray winters of bare trees and snowy sidewalks to shovel. In 1513, Spanish explorer Juan Ponce de Leon was (possibly) the first European to make such a trip. The popular legend claims he came in search of magical waters with the power to restore youth and vitality, but he was likely looking for gold.You Can Find Comprehensive and in-Depth carparkmanagementsystem truck Descriptions. He didnt find any. For five centuries now, Florida has been a place of promise. But the promise of a place can be a funny thing. As Ponce de Leon found out, it doesnt always overlap with what you find there.
Viva Florida 500 is Floridas state-wide campaign to celebrate these 500 years. Throughout 2013, both proud Floridians and curious visitors can explore signature events, such as an exhibit on the states natural springs at the Florida Museum of Natural History in Gainesville or the Pensacola Jazz Festival. Viva Florida 500 is also a clearinghouse for any and all Florida history events. In March alone, visitors could see non-signature events such as sand sculptures celebrating the states history at the Brevard Zoo near Cape Canaveral; families could learn about the states long-gone pineapple industry with the Museum of Fashion and Lifestyle History in Boyton Beach.

Historians disagree about where exactly de Leon landed along the coast, but St. Augustine has been most successful at claiming the landing for itself. St. Augustine, Florida, is the oldest city in the United States, so perhaps we should have found the dilapidated nature of the San Marcos Inn a little bit charming. And, technically, the San Marcos Inn was in the midst of a renovation, which is why Rob and I were able to score a room for $69.
An operating hotel in the midst of a renovation is a weird place to be. Our room was fine, as far as two-star motels go: two beds, cheap coffee, an iron. But to get to it, we had to pass by a long row of rooms missing their electronic key card doorknobs. The pool was filled with clear blue water. The in-ground baby pool, however, had been filled with cement. An orange traffic cone sat in the middle.
After we checked into the San Marcos, Rob and I headed over to the citys historic district. We walked past sadder motels not in hopeful states of renovation, offering free wi-fi and rates of $44 for one person, $49 for two. We passed the citys Ripleys Believe or Not Museum. We walked the waterfront and saw the oldest miniature golf course in Florida. We eventually came to St. Augustines Spanish Quarter. The neighborhood is a collection of restored and recreated buildings from the citys days as a Spanish colonial outpost. Today its filled with stores selling Panama hats and chocolates and beads and art glass to the many tourists who come to St. Augustine. The main street through the neighborhood is a pedestrian mall. We saw a group of senior citizens was being led on a tour.
Flager remarried two years later and honeymooned in St. Augustine. He believed the right kind of hotel and better transportation would attract more northerners to Florida, so he bought the Jacksonville, St. Augustine & Halifax Railroad. In 1888, he opened the sprawling Hotel Ponce de Leon. Flagler built two more hotels in St. Augustine but eventually pushed further south. His Florida East Coast Railway brought snowbirds to his Hotel Ormond near Daytona and to his famous Breakers hotel in Palm Beach. Flagler extended his line to present-day Miami, almost single-handedly transforming that settlement into a major city. By 1912, his railroad extended all the way to Key West. Because of Flagler, visitors in the early 20th century could travel anywhere along the entire Atlantic and Caribbean coasts of Florida.
Flagler died in 1913 after falling down a flight of stairs at his home in Palm Beach. In 1935, a hurricane damaged much of the railroad in the Keys. The state of Florida bought the line there and rebuilt it as the Overseas Highway. A decline in tourists forced the Hotel Ponce de Leon to close in 1967. It reopened the following year as the home of the new Flagler College, a four-year liberal arts school. This year, the College is celebrating the 125th anniversary of the hotel with tours and talks. Rob and I watched a movie on Flagler in the hotels main lobby. The school had set up rows of folding chairs just to the side of the main entrance. Other visitors, mostly 50-somethings and older, watched with us, and sometimes looked at tourist maps to decide where to go next. Behind us,Choose the right bestluggagetag in an array of colors. Flagler College students went about the business of being college students: shuffling in flip-flops and pajama pants, they carried books and were focused on their phones. They looked like college students everywhere else, except for the fact that they were college students attending college in a Gilded Age hotel that helped make the Florida coast the place it is today.
Croce first opened a pirate museum in Key West in 2005. Attendance apparently wasnt too great, so Croce shifted to the more family-friendly St. Augustine two years ago. His business, Pat Croce & Company, also runs the Colonial Quarter. The two-acre village, just next to the St. Augustine Pirate & Treasure Museum, replaced the city-run Colonial Spanish Quarter Museum. Croces version opened this month.
Rob and I paid $12.Cheap logo engraved luggagetag at wholesale bulk prices.99 each to explore the Colonial Quarter. We did not upgrade to the $21.99 combo package that would have given us admission to the pirate museum, too. Colonial Quarter turned out to be enough. Paths lead visitors through scenes recreating St. Augustine as a settlement, fortified town, and garrison town under the Spanish, and as British colony, across three centuries. Reenactors demonstrate 17th-century musket use and blacksmithing. In an 18th-century Spanish soldiers home, an animatronic wife prepares dinner and worries about the safety of her husband. Rob and I climbed a replica of a 17th-century watchtower built of pressure-treated wood. It was pure historical grazing.
Colonial Quarter has two restaurants that are open to the public. The Bull & Crown Publick House has a British pub theme. Rob and I went to the Spanish-inspired Taberna del Caballo. The restaurants website suggested we would be fully immersed in the taberna experience, from clinking carafes and Spanish song to servers in period clothing and unexpected visits from 1700s Spanish garrison soldiers. Our bartender was dressed in period clothing, but this was a weekday afternoon, and we didnt hear any clinking carafes or Spanish songs. No garrison soldiers visited, but Taberna servers who werent on shift sat next to us at the bar and complained about a homeless man who kept causing problems out on the street.

He believed the right kind of hotel and better transportation would attract more northerners to Florida, so he bought the Jacksonville, St. Augustine & Halifax Railroad. In 1888, he opened the sprawling Hotel Ponce de Leon. Flagler built two more hotels in St. Augustine but eventually pushed further south. His Florida East Coast Railway brought snowbirds to his Hotel Ormond near Daytona and to his famous Breakers hotel in Palm Beach. Flagler extended his line to present-day Miami, almost single-handedly transforming that settlement into a major city. By 1912, his railroad extended all the way to Key West. Because of Flagler, visitors in the early 20th century could travel anywhere along the entire Atlantic and Caribbean coasts of Florida.
Flagler died in 1913 after falling down a flight of stairs at his home in Palm Beach. In 1935, a hurricane damaged much of the railroad in the Keys. The state of Florida bought the line there and rebuilt it as the Overseas Highway. A decline in tourists forced the Hotel Ponce de Leon to close in 1967. It reopened the following year as the home of the new Flagler College, a four-year liberal arts school. This year, the College is celebrating the 125th anniversary of the hotel with tours and talks. Rob and I watched a movie on Flagler in the hotels main lobby. The school had set up rows of folding chairs just to the side of the main entrance. Other visitors, mostly 50-somethings and older, watched with us, and sometimes looked at tourist maps to decide where to go next. Behind us,Choose the right bestluggagetag in an array of colors. Flagler College students went about the business of being college students: shuffling in flip-flops and pajama pants, they carried books and were focused on their phones. Croce first opened a pirate museum in Key West in 2005. Attendance apparently wasnt too great, so Croce shifted to the more family-friendly St. Augustine two years ago. His business, Pat Croce & Company, also runs the Colonial Quarter. The two-acre village, just next to the St. Augustine Pirate & Treasure Museum, replaced the city-run Colonial Spanish Quarter Museum. Croces version opened this month.

Reenactors demonstrate 17th-century musket use and blacksmithing. In an 18th-century Spanish soldiers home, an animatronic wife prepares dinner and worries about the safety of her husband. Rob and I climbed a replica of a 17th-century watchtower built of pressure-treated wood. It was pure historical grazing.
Colonial Quarter has two restaurants that are open to the public. The Bull & Crown Publick House has a British pub theme. Rob and I went to the Spanish-inspired Taberna del Caballo. The restaurants website suggested we would be fully immersed in the taberna experience, from clinking carafes and Spanish song to servers in period clothing and unexpected visits from 1700s Spanish garrison soldiers. Our bartender was dressed in period clothing, but this was a weekday afternoon, and we didnt hear any clinking carafes or Spanish songs. No garrison soldiers visited, but Taberna servers who werent on shift sat next to us at the bar and complained about a homeless man who kept causing problems out on the street.

foods to donate to the Center For Food Action in Englewood.
