A closer look at Assassin's Creed 3

This is likely because if you didn't play the whole thing to see how everything ties together into the overarching conspiracy, you might be led to believe that someone had an agenda.

The first game takes place in the classical era in a very Arab-centric series of locations with an Arabian protagonist fighting against the forces of The Crudsades and the Catholic Church. The game depicts the first major conflict between the Assassins and the Templars. with the later being a force who uses death-dealing to maintain peace and justice, while the former is a power-hungry group of megalomaniacs who will stop at nothing to enforce on the world their own vision of how it should be run and organized.

The game makes it clear that the modern incarnation of that organization has become seperate from the church, labeling itself the Abstergo Corporation. But through most of history it was essentially a secret arm of the Roman Catholic church, run from a post in the Vatican.

It's all rather abstract in that first game, with the most concrete connection being the need to kill a few actual Crusaders in some of the missions. The second through fourth games, known collectively as Assassin's Creed II, take a more direct approach, having moved the story ahead to a new world-center, Renaissance Italy, the protagonist fights directly against the forces of The Pope, and in Brotherhood, is even forced to directly confront Pope Alexander IV with intent to assassinate him after leaving him alive at the end of the previous story, though the pontiff's son, Cesare had already taken care of it.

In the upcoming sequel, Assassin's Creed III, time will jump again, this time to Colonial Era America. The player will take on Connor, a half-native man trained up by the Assassins. The time period and location means that, while the Pope may no longer be directly involved in Connor's plot, he will be surrounded by a conflict between American Colonials and British Imperials, violence toward Native Americans, and the beginnings of American slavery.

Potentially this will be the most controversial Assassin's Creed game yet, and thus Gamesindusty International magazine asked Assassin's Creed III creative director Alex Hutchinson and Assassin's Creed III: Liberation - the mobile platforms version of the game - scriptwriter Jill Murray about their philosophy toward designing a game that includes such potentially inflammatory topics.

The Fictional storyline he's referring to is the planned DLC adventure for the game entitled The Tyranny of King George, which you can read more about here.

"As basically a bunch of often middle-aged white guys and girls working on a game, we knew we were not experts in Native American history," Hutchinson said of the upcoming game. "A lot of the things we thought we knew were wrong, or caricatures, or exaggerations of the truth."

This led to exhaustive research by the team, similar to how they handled previous incarnations; commendably, trying to be as well-informed as possible about the cultures and figures of the time they were writing about. The more controversial, the more careful they need to be about being accurate. They decided that they did need to draw a line this time however, and chose not to deal with the slavery of the era.

"We tried to present [slavery] objectively without crossing over into commenting on it," Hutchinson said. "We didn't want to take one step into that issue and then not deal with it, so really for us, it's not a topic we try to tackle in this game."

Murray, however wasn't able to take the same course, as the protagonist of Liberation is a freed slave, and completely skirting the issue would be poor characterization. "For me the importance of talking about things outweighs the fear," Murray said. "The fear you can deal with by doing your research, by talking to people, by really looking deeply into the character, understanding how they work, how they respond to their environment. To me, it's so much more important to talk about things, I'm willing to set the fear aside long enough to do my research and make sure I get it right."

Worldly collection on your doorstep

J ust a train ride away from West Croydon on the Overground at Forest hill is the imposing Horniman Museum.

The building is quite a curious mixture of the old and the new including a clock tower. The complex boasts a Grecian mosaic and totem pole as well as a wooden cabin with a grass roof and a fantastic 19th century conservatory.

Just a glimpse of what's in store in this veritable hive of interest.

This is all set within the grounds of the Horniman gardens which are elevated above the surrounding area and give sweeping views across South London. There's a great outdoor sitting area for eating lunch from the café inside. This really is family day out territory and we haven't even gone inside yet.

Once you enter the museum most of the fantastically varied exhibitions are free. There is also an aquarium which is very reasonably priced. Open from 10.30am to 5.30pm daily this museum is a place to escape to and explore hidden treasures of the world.

The Horniman Museum has a total of 350,000 objects to explore, from a giant stuffed walrus to a Japanese Merman.

The Merman specimen was acquired by the Wellcome Collection in 1919 under the name Japanese Monkey-fish. It was transferred to the Horniman in 1982, where it has since been known as the Merman. It looks like a cross between a monkey and a fish and after extensive investigation it is believed to be made up of clay, fish and chicken bones.

Frederick John Horniman, the founder of the museum was a Victorian tea trader and philanthropist who began collecting objects, specimens and artefacts which represented natural history and the arts and handicrafts from around the world from 1860. His idea was to bring the world to Forest Hill and educate and enrich the lives of the local community who did not have the opportunity to travel for themselves.

Now the 350,000 strong collection includes internationally important specimens of anthropology and musical instruments, as well as an acclaimed aquarium and natural history collection.

The natural history collection includes a huge walrus which takes centre stage in the centre of the collection. surrounded by monkeys, birds, big cats, foxes and the rather macabre display of dogs heads.Proxense's advanced handsfreeaccess technology.

At the Horniman you can really see the collections up-close and you can even pick up, try on and play with some of the objects.

NHGRI to develop revolutionary technologies for exploring genome function

The National Human Genome Research Institute (NHGRI), part of the National Institutes of Health (NIH), has awarded 10 grants, totalling $10.5 million, to develop revolutionary technologies that will help researchers identify millions of genomic elements that play a role in determining what genes are expressed and at what levels in different cells.

These multi-year grants are part of the Encyclopedia of DNA Elements (ENCODE) project, whose aim is to provide the scientific community with a comprehensive catalogue of functional genomic elements that will ultimately help explain the role that the genome plays in health and disease.

“The ENCODE project is providing a Rosetta Stone to understand how the sequence of the human genome forms the words that tell our bodies how to work at the molecular level,” said Eric D Green, MD,A wireless indoorpositioning is described in this paper, PhD, director of NHGRI, which directs and funds the ENCODE project. “By developing more revolutionary technologies for probing genome function, we expect to accelerate these efforts.”

Sequencing the human genome and identifying the small fraction of its bases that directly code for proteins were among the first steps in understanding how the genome functions. But the remaining larger fraction of functional genomic elements continues to be a mystery. In response, NHGRI launched the ENCODE project to identify all the functional elements in the human genome, along with the modENCODE project to identify the functional elements in the fly and worm genomes and a smaller effort examining the mouse genome. These projects have been rapidly releasing data to the research community.

These ENCODE efforts have collected large amounts of data with a wide variety of cell types, in many cases identifying key functional landmarks. By studying these landmarks, researchers can establish the locations of DNA sequences that perform a variety of essential functions.

“In an exciting development, researchers are beginning to use the ENCODE catalogues to understand how variation in the DNA sequence might influence diseases such as cancer and autoimmune disorders,” said Mike Pazin, PhD, a programme director for ENCODE in NHGRI's Division of Extramural Research.

Each person has one genome sequence that is basically the same in all cell types. In contrast, many genomic elements function in only some cell types. As a result, researchers must test many cell types using many different experimental approaches to develop a detailed inventory of the functional elements in the genome. Revolutionary technological improvements are required to discover and test the millions of functional elements and to learn more precisely what they do.If you have a kidneystone, Significant advances are also needed to establish whether information about these functional elements can be used in the diagnosis and treatment of disease.

Discovery of functional genomic elements will be addressed by funding projects for a new assay to identify RNA splicing elements, new assays to identify promoters and enhancers, as well as a project to improve assays for identifying functional elements by allowing these assays to work reliably using smaller samples. Splicing is the process that joins RNA copies of gene segments together to form mRNA, the blueprint for the production of proteins. Errors in splicing sometimes lead to human disease. Promoters specify the sites in the genome where genes begin and much gene regulation occurs. Enhancers are genomic elements that can turn on expression of nearby and distant genes. Mutations in promoters and enhancers can cause human disease.

Validation of biological elements will be addressed by funding projects for new methods with improved throughput, and a smaller project to improve accuracy by testing elements in their natural genomic context.

Discovery of Functional Elements: Christopher Burge, Ph.D.; Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Cambridge, Mass.; $800,000 ; Researchers will develop a new technology to catalog all of the RNA branch points that form in mRNA during splicing.

Mats Ljungman, Ph.D.; University of Michigan, Ann Arbor; $1,200,000 ; Using bromouridine labeling of RNA, these researchers will develop new assays (BruChase-Seq and BrUV-Seq) to identity promoters and enhancers and to measure mRNA degradation and splicing kinetics.

Raymond David Hawkins, Ph.D.; University of Washington School of Medicine, Seattle; $460,000 (over two years); These researchers will improve the power of ChIP-seq assays to identify functional elements. ChIP-seq is one of the fundamental assays used in ENCODE to identify the locations in the genome that are attached to a particular protein.

New Android tablets from Amazon, Huawei plus smartphones from Motorola and Sony

The Android tablet market could use some help right now, and the rumor mill will have your hopes running high for some summer relief. For months now, rumors of an Amazon Android tablet has been fueling speculation, with DigiTimes constantly fanning the flames. Writing of a possible launch this August, the Asian tech publication also indicates that an upcoming Amazon Android tablet will have a Quanta processor and Wintek touch panel.

Things are still sketchy for Amazon’s tablet plans, but Huawei is solid, with the unveiling of its latest 7-inch Android 3.2 tablet. Called MediaPad, Huawei’s tablet will come with a dual-core 1.2GHz processor, supporting 1080p HD video playback. With a 1.3-megapixel front-facing camera and a 5-megapixel camera in the back, the MediaPad will also have HD video recording. While this isn’t Huawei’s first Android tablet, it will be the first to run Android 3.2 Honeycomb, an optimized version of Android 3.1 for 7-inch displays.
Ice Cream Sandwich gains support, Motorola & Sony launching lifestyle phones

Motorola Droid BionicWhile the tablet market struggles to get a hold on Android’s OS, Google looks to rectify some larger fragmentation issues with the upcoming tablet/smartphone OS, Ice Cream Sandwich. This summer could welcome some new devices for the cross-platform OS, including one from Google itself. The Google Nexus 4G will be loaded with an LTE radio, 1GB of RAM, 1080p HD video capture, and an integrated NFC chip. With 3D capabilities, a super-slim design and Open GL head tracking, the Nexus 4G is an aspiring competitor to the iPhone. An upcoming tablet also rumored to run on Ice Cream Sandwich is the next version of Asus’ Transformer. With a quad core processor from NVIDIA’s third-generation Tegra processor Kal-El, the Transformer 2 could be a speedy, multi-tasking powerhouse.

Motorola also has big plans for the summer, with a general launch time for Motorola’s Droid Bionic finally being revealed. Having received an overhaul since first being introduced at CES 2011, the Droid Bionic’s expected to be a Verizon-specific version of its popular Atrix 4G for AT&T. Anticipated updates include a redesigned Android skin and a faster processor, with aims to compete head-to-head with the iPhone’s Verizon line-up. Sony, on the other hand, is hedging its bets with two new Xperia phones designed for very different users. The Active is a rugged handset, ready for those with an active lifestyle. The Ray is full of media perks, with LifeSound headphones and LiveDock integration.

CNET to the Rescue: We are done with PCs (and Macs)

Unfortunately, according to Donald Bell, it's every man and woman for themselves. For phones, users are at the mercy of the carriers to issue an over-the-air update. Users could possibly root their devices in order to manually force an update (or more specifically, a ROM based on 2.3.4).

In the meantime, disable auto-syncing for apps, and try not to connect to unknown Wi-Fi hot spots.

Users of tablets running an OS prior to 2.3.4 can bug the manufacturer to push out an over-the-air update, but there's no (easy) way to force an update manually, especially since so many tablets prior to Honeycomb require extensive tooling of the code in order to run on the larger hardware Android wasn't designed for. The most high-profile among these tablets would include the Galaxy Tab, B&N Nook Color, and Dell Streak 5&7. The Tab is apparently getting the update later this month. The Streaks are running 2.2.2 and I haven't heard any word on an update. The Nook Color just received the 2.2 update, so a fast update to 2.3 seems unlikely.

No! But that is a good idea...shows you're about to stream should list the amount of data in said stream. It can vary widely depending on video definition and effectiveness of the compression and codec. There's no way to gauge for sure without knowing the details.

Brian: At home, no. We need something like in the mobile space where carriers will warn you via SMS that you are approaching your cap.

Rafe: I'd recommend a car charger if that would work for you. Solar chargers can be slow or expensive. But yes, they do exist. Treehugger did a comparison in 2008. The products mentioned may be out of date but it points you to major manufacturers.
