Chocolate a sweet remedy for many ills?

International researchers have uncovered even more healthy properties of flavanols -- the antioxidants found in cocoa beans.

Eighteen chocolate-centered studies -- including investigations of how cocoa might affect blood pressure, heart disease, painful nerve disorders and cancer risk -- were to be presented Wednesday at the American Chemical Society's annual meeting in San Diego.

Some caveats: Most of the studies have not yet been accepted for publication in a peer-reviewed journal, so those findings are preliminary. Many studies were also small in scope, with relatively few participants. And some were animal studies, and results might not translate to humans.

While larger, observational studies have shown possible health benefits from dark chocolate or cocoa, this new research begins to explore how those benefits occur, explained Dr.Welcome to the Lilla beddinges google satellite map! "The thing to keep in mind: All of these are very small studies," Fonarow said. "But they are important steps in investigating the mechanisms by which chocolate or cocoa may have beneficial cardiovascular effects."

Several of the studies suggested that cocoa might protect against inflammation.

"One of the presumed mechanisms by which cocoa or dark chocolate could be beneficial, or flavonoids in general, is through the mechanism of decreasing vascular inflammation," part of the process leading to strokes and heart attack, Fonarow noted.

For instance, in a study involving obese mice, researchers found that adding cocoa to their high-fat diet slowed down their weight gain.

The mice "have elevated body fat, fasting blood glucose and serum insulin levels. And they have markers for systemic inflammation," said study author Joshua Lambert, an assistant professor of food science at Pennsylvania State University.

"we saw that these markers of systemic inflammation went back down to the same level as they would be in mice that were on a low-fat diet," Lambert said. "So it seems like we're able to take this inflammatory response and reduce it back to the level you see in lean mice."

In another study from Italy, 40 people, half of whom were smokers, were randomly assigned to receive either dark chocolate or milk chocolate. Dark chocolate only was found to reduce "oxidative stress" involved in dangerous clot formation -- and only in smokers.

"The results, suggesting that dark chocolate can reduce oxidative stress and subsequent disease in smokers are intriguing and certainly worthy of further study," said Dr. Thomas Glynn, director of cancer science and trends and international cancer control for the American Cancer Society.China professional plasticmoulds,

"The authors establish the biological plausibility of antioxidant effects of dark chocolate in a small [group] of smokers and demonstrate the potential harm-reducing effects for smokers of eating dark chocolate," Glynn said.

But, he added, "great caution is necessary, however, in interpreting the results of studies regarding the possible health benefits of dark chocolate -- none of the evidence to date is definitive and is based on small studies with limited time duration. No one, despite the enjoyment of dark chocolate, should consider using it as a substitute for healthy eating, getting exercise and above all, stopping smoking."

Also being presented at the meeting is a meta-analysis of human research on cocoa flavonoids and cardiac risk factors. The analysis, which combined data from 24 studies on 1,106 people, appeared in the Journal of Nutrition last September.

"Cocoa lowered blood pressure, lowered LDL ['bad'] cholesterol, raised HDL cholesterol -- the good cholesterol -- and improved insulin resistance," said senior study author Eric Ding,At Blow mouldengineering we specialize in conceptual prototype design. a nutritionist, epidemiologist and faculty member at Harvard Medical School. He said cocoa also might have a role in dilating vessels to improve blood flow.

In his study, Lambert said, "we used unsweetened regular cocoa powder. How that relates to chocolate -- there's a couple of degrees of separation. Because when you make chocolate you add fat, in the form of cocoa butter and sugar."

I know I’ve not offered any new writing in a while, and I feel that I owe my Reader an apology. This is unreasonable of me, yet I feel the need to offer an explanation nevertheless.

Earlier tonight, Mrs. Likko wondered why it is that I was cranky and made an unkind remark. We’d had a very nice morning and a pleasant afternoon together. These two concerns are related. You see, it’s been insanely busy at my meatworld job. It’s a combination of my eviction practice and my “big boy litigation” practice. All of these are converging to require trials and intense out-of-the-area depositions all at once. The eviction trials keep on getting pushed back by the court. What ought to be short-cause, ten-minute trials are pumped up into four-day jury trial events due to a “public interest” law firm that invokes their clients’ jury trial rights so as to “negotiate” cash-for-keys money from my landlord clients, the merits of the case being irrelevant.* Well, as it turns out, a critical mass of my clients have decided that they’re tired of being extorted, and would rather pay me my hourly rate to fight these guys than to feed the monster. And the courts, surprisingly enough, think they have better things to do than jury trials for evictions, so we keep getting our trials continued because criminal courts keep poaching our juries at the last minute.

So I have half a dozen clients screaming at me that their tenants have been living in their houses for six months to (in one case) an entire year without paying any rent, wrecking the places and pissing off the neighbors, and no one in the legal system will do anything about it. And documents and trial dates and witnesses to wrangle, juggling each one every week as a new date approaches. Worse, my office’s infrastructure is not set up to handle all of this with anything approaching efficiency.

Then, I’ve got what would otherwise be a tasty and interesting case that I could sink my teeth into, only I haven’t the time to do it because of all the fishing evictions. This case will take me away from home for overnight, multiple-day depositions at least five times over the next six weeks. It’s a technical, complex, bet-the-company sort of case. And I haven’t been able to put in the time and intellectual energy that the case deserves.

All the other lawyers in my firm who litigate are also up to their eyebrows and crying for life vests as well, so I can’t count on them for a lot of support. Which is what I did, the very first day of my time away from the pressure-cooker. It didn’t help that I’d got very little sleep for the two days before leaving, but lack of sleep does not cause the symptoms I experienced upon landing in Birmingham, Alabama. These included a headache of an intensity I’d never known despite a history of migraines, and sudden-onset nausea along with other even less pleasant gastrointestinal disquietude. And the weirdest thing about it is that the exercise of sitting down and writing, expressing my thoughts and giving vent to my frustrations, is somewhat calming and palliative. Stephen King, at least apocroyphically, was once asked, “Why do you write at all?” and his answer was, “You assume I have a choice.” If the story isn’t true, it ought to be. I think to some degree that syndrome applies to everyone who writes for a blog and receives in return only the compensation of the pleasure of knowing they’ve been read. The act of writing is itself a pleasure, or at least a release.

Woman cares for Venice's homeless for 28 years

A few weeks ago, she was in a dilapidated, burned-out shed in the alley where Granville and Weber streets meet in Venice to give food, water, cigarettes and coffee to the homeless man the local kids nicknamed "Jesus."

Wilson watches over Jesus, whose real name is Ron White. He was lying pretty still on his dirty, stained pink mattress, so as she often does between midnight and 1 a.m., she stepped inside his shed to make sure he was OK. The floor caved in.

"My shoulders held me up. I was trapped between the floor joist and the floor itself. I was in a hole," Wilson said.

"His mattress was trying to fall through that hole onto me. He was trying to help me. I had to keep telling him not to move."

Loose debris fell through the hole and onto Wilson. At the same time she was desperately trying to hold the mattress up and find her cell phone, which fell somewhere in the debris in front of her.

She lost her shoes and partial denture.

Venice's police and fire departments finally rescued her. It did not take them long, but she said it seemed like forever because she panicked.

"I thought my life was over," she said. "I was thinking to myself, if I get out of here alive, that I would not do this again. I would be much more careful in the future."

Wilson is a full-figured woman who said all of her was sore and stiff after the ordeal. Yet, she is back on the streets caring for the homeless, as she has been doing for 28 years.

"I am sore, but not sore enough to quit giving a helping hand where I see the need. These are some tough times. Two and three families are living in one home to reduce the burden and stress of bills," she said.

She is the daughter of a Baptist preacher, former nursing home aide and Venice alderwoman, and she used to run a homeless shelter called Life Candlelight in the city. The overhead on the shelter got to be too much, so now she operates out of her home.

"Jesus is my friend. I still have to go see about him. He doesn't have any sense of value. He eats out of garbage cans and if it were not for the used clothing I beg people to donate to me for the homeless, he would not have any clothes or shoes," she said.

Wilson mainly focuses on Venice, a city with a great view of the Gateway Arch where 40 percent of the 1,890 residents and 60 percent of the children live in poverty. She goes as far as Alton to help where she can.

While feeding prostitutes, she also passes out condoms and tells them to use them to make sure they don't get HIV. She feeds homeless children and does whatever she can to help them, too.

"But, for the grace of God, it could be me, my husband, our families or our friends. I feel it is my duty to help out," Wilson said. "I thank my husband of 45 years, who is also my high school sweetheart, who does everything he can to help out."

After Wilson was rescued from the hole, White found her partial denture.

"He took it with him and cut my teeth up with a saw to make them fit his mouth," Wilson said. "He let his friend try them on."

White showed her the modified false teeth while sitting in her van.

"He tried to give them back. He told me I could wear them," she said.

She was horrified initially, but said she understands White has mental issues.

White often thinks he is someplace he isn't, living in the past. He gets dates, sequences and events wrong.

He thinks he belongs in his burned-out shed that he said was the home of a friend and is near his mother's former home. His dirty, pink mattress is surrounded by feces, old toilets, wood, nails,Silicone moldmaking Rubber, pipes, old furniture, paper and bricks.

White's mother is dead and other relatives do not visit him. He thinks his mom died last week, but Wilson said it has been a much longer time.

"Ron is homeless and hungry and would die from the cold temperatures and a lack of food if someone didn't feed and clothe him," she said. "We, the Chief of Police Theodore Adams, Alderman Stella Williams and others, including the children, help Jesus out. We take him to different shelters. He just gets up and leaves,"

White always returns to the shed.

He grinned as he said: "I have a barber in Granite City. I am going to go there and get a haircut."

Wilson said White has refused any efforts to get him a bath or grooming.

"He is a nice person. He just has a mental problem. He's not on drugs," Wilson said.

Wilson said it saddens her when other homeless people beat White up and take his clothes and blankets. Sometimes he just gives the items to them so they won't bother him, Wilson said.

It was a windy, cold Monday afternoon when a reporter and photographer arrived unannounced at Wilson's home on Hampden Street in Venice. White was sitting at the dining room table, enjoying a hot cup of coffee and smoking a cigarette.

Wilson carefully placed a cover on her car seat before White sat down. She said he acts like the vehicle is his. "But I don't mind. He says the passenger seat is his," she said chuckling.

Chattering all the way, White said he wants to work and the only thing keeping him from it is a bad back. He used to work at the Melvin Price U.S. Army Depot in Granite City before the military moved out in the late '90s.

He proudly showed off the shed and said he only gets cold if he doesn't put on enough blankets or if he forgets to put on his gloves. He doesn't have a television set or a radio and waits faithfully every evening for Wilson to show up so he can listen to his favorite jazz and blues music program on channel 49 of her satellite radio.

Thompson Investment Castings plans relocation to Old Dover Road in Rochester

The new owners are New Durham resident Mike Haley who is vice president of TIC, and Tyler Stone from Alton, who is the company president.

Haley has worked at Thompson Center Arms/TIC as an environmental engineer since 1985, and Stone was brought in by Smith & Wesson in 2007 to be general manager of the complex after they purchased it that year.

S&W announced in December of 2010 that it had decided to move gun production out of Rochester to its headquarters in Springfield, Mass., but indicated that it was seeking a buyer for the foundry operation.

Haley said that Smith and Wesson, while keeping the foundry running and signing everyone's pay checks throughout 2011,Low prices on projectorlamp from Projector Point London UK. was keen to turn the operation over to local ownership.

He and Stone, working with various entities, were able to get a financial package together and purchase the foundry equipment and the Thompson Investment Castings name. The price was in the region of $1 million said Haley. The official purchase of the business took place on Jan. 23 of this year.

"Rochester knew us and wanted to keep us," said Haley.

If the Planning Board process runs smoothly, TIC will purchase the property, with financial help from Rochester-based Profile Bank, and move the mold-making portion of its business there in April. Then it will take another six weeks to be erected and outfitted with the metal casting porting of the business.

Haley explained that for a time, the molds created on Old Dover Road will be trucked up to North Main Street for the metal casting, but after this, while the foundry is moved into the new building there will be a period when no finished products are being manufactured.

In anticipation of this, TIC is building up what Haley calls "a bridging inventory," and to accomplish this, nine temporary workers are being added to the current workforce of 47 people.

"A year from now we will have over 50 people and we'd like to hire 12 or more as the business gets going," said Haley.

At present, about 70 percent of TIC business comes from gun manufacturers, including 30 percent from S&W, with whom Haley and Stone have very cordial relations.

It is the aim of the company, especially now that it has attained 9001 certification, to expand the customer base and the product range it produces. TIC, according to Haley, is known for its high quality standards and its ability to cast metals from intricate and complex molds to extremely demanding specifications..

"Diversity is the key," said Haley, noting that apart from the gun industry, TIC supplies many other sectors of the economy, the medical community being one, and forceps being an example of a product.

Solar idea becomes solar reality

Kenny Kingstrom cannot wait to see his energy meter turn the other way.

That's because he has installed a large solar-power array on his three-acre property along U.S. Highway 69. Instead of his meter showing only watts used, it sometimes will turn back, showing the watts generated.

But first, Alliant Energy will have to install a bidirectional meter.

It is not a solar panel. It is actually 24 solar panels, or modules, each of them 3 feet by 5 feet. The whole thing is called a solar array and is about 24 feet 7 inches by 15 feet 2 inches.China professional plasticmoulds, There is about an inch between each panel to give the wind somewhere to go and to allow space for the material's expansion during heat.

The solar array generates a capacity of 6 kilowatts of energy per hour, but on a cloudy day probably more like 3 kilowatts.

Kenny in 2004 had installed a geothermal heating and cooling system on their property at 19140 U.S. Highway 69, just south of the Albert Lea city limits. He wasn't burning a fire to heat his house anymore. What's next? He decided he wanted to generate electricity. There were two ways: wind or solar.

A wind turbine has to be up in the air and has several moving parts, so that presents two challenges. A solar array, however, lasts 20 to 30 years, and the hardest part is installing it. He began investigating the possibilities.

"His main intention is leaving the least footprint possible in this world," MaChar said.

She said the motivation for her husband has never been savings. She said environmental stewardship is important for him. He was recycling before recycling programs existed.

The couple has traveled a few times to the Midwest Renewable Energy Fair in Custer, Wis., near Stevens Point, and they had an interest in the possibilities of solar stemming from those trips. And the price of solar has really dropped.

Installation began in November and wrapped up in January. Brother-in-law Brad Sickenger and Cargill co-worker Kevin Levorson helped the Kingstroms with much of the hard work. Just think of concrete forms, concrete, mounting the racking systems, installing the modules, grounding, installing the big ballast blocks, connecting to the home and so forth.

And it still isn't on. That's going to happen in the next week or two.

Gamer said the solar equipment is assembled in Eugene, Ore., and made from Chinese parts. The glass and aluminum, however, are American.

He said each module generates DC currency. The standard method would have required the modules to generate over a set amount before converting it to AC power, which is what is sent to the power grid. That means people with solar panels often found themselves not generating power until about 10 a.m.

But the modules at the Kingstroms' place have a new method, Gamer said. Microinverters on the back of each one convert the power to AC at a lower amplitude.

"When the sun comes up, you're ready to produce power," he said.

The technology comes from a California company called Enphase Energy.

Gamer said 15 years ago, people using solar power had to store power in large quantities of batteries. Now, state law allows homeowners that can generate power -- be it by hydro, wind or any method -- to connect to the grid without going through the long process required for, as examples, a wind farm or a coal plant. The threshold is 40 kilowatts or fewer.

It's called the grid-tied electrical system. Instead of keeping power in batteries, homeowners who generate power add their load to the power grid.

Gamer said this actually helps power companies and their customers.

"What you are doing for them is peak-shaving," he said.

The utility companies have to pay premium fees to acquire power during peak-usage times. The power the Kingstroms generate might not be much in the grand scheme of things, but every drop in the bucket helps. The power generated by homeowners -- power that couldn't possibly be more than the demand -- flattens the peaks. It means there is power being generated that the utility companies don't have to pay that premium fee for, lessening everyone's costs.

Kenny had to locate a spot. He couldn't place panels on his roof, because his house faces east and west. South is the best direction for sun. Gamer took readings on various places on his property. They got a setback variance from the county, four trees were felled, and though the garage might look close, it doesn't cast a shadow on the array.

Through the process, Kenny has enjoyed learning. He said he is a hands-on learner.

Solar is one of the few power sources that doesn't seek to boil water into steam -- even nuclear does that. And solar is the only power source that doesn't make something spin, like wind and dams.

The solar modules collect all visible light, plus a little more, Gamer said. They agitate electrons in the silicone, which forces a DC current.

There is a federal tax credit Kingstrom is planning to take advantage of, possibly even sell. Some power companies offer a credit, too, but not Alliant Energy.

Gamer said a typical home has a demand of 10 kilowatts per hour. Kenny said he hopes to cut his usage in half.

Ever since Woodland sold the farm to the Trust for Public Land in 2000 he's been following the slow but steady transformation from duck breeding ground to passive river park playground.

The "infamously known" part are his words.

"I'm not trying to make it something it wasn't," he insisted. "If you drive past a dairy, it smells like cows. Naturally, if you drive past a duck farm, it would most likely smell like ducks."

Woodland misses life on the 605 duck farm. "I don't miss the government intrusion and all the politics. But it was unique. It was a niche business within a niche."

At 69, he's changed directions, not retired. He bought a winery in Paso Robles, his hometown, where he grows grapes for Eberle Wines and a new label named after his wife, Patricia Diane Vineyards.

The avian drama is playing out as the town works to craft its first-ever chicken ordinance. Although McClellan can't prove his situation was the catalyst, he said he suspects that it might have been.

Marchese, recovering from surgery, was unavailable for comment Monday.

Board of Selectmen Chairman Roland Fernald said Marchese was only doing his job, responding to a complaint about the chickens by McClellan's neighbor, which led to a review of his property.

That leaves McClellan shaking his head: He knows of at least two others in his Bolt Hill Road neighborhood who have chickens and haven't been singled out.

"The town isn't using common sense. If my neighbor is so upset, I'm willing to make changes," he said. "I don't really know what I can do. No one is willing to come to my property, and every time I went to Town Hall, I was told everything was fine."

McClellan didn't hear from the town until late December, when Marchese wrote that, "upon further review," the McClellans had to get a building permit and apply for site plan review by the Planning Board.

What happened in the ensuing month was a flurry of letters back and forth and several visits to Town Hall — including one to Town Planner Kate Pelletier, who told McClellan he did not have to apply for site plan review, according to McClellan. Pelletier could not be reached for comment.

The ultimate slap for McClellan, however, was a Jan. 12 Board of Selectmen decision approving Marchese's request to order McClellan to remove the coop and get rid of the chickens or face fines of up to $100 a day.

McClellan said he was never notified of the meeting and, therefore, was not given a chance to explain his position.

"I don't understand," he said. "I tried to do everything I was told to do. And to top it off, my neighbors have chickens and the town is not going to tell them to remove them."

Scientists design 3D thin-film silicon solar-cells with better efficiency potential

Researchers from the Academy of Sciences of the Czech Republic and experts from the Swiss-based group Oerlikon Solar Lab targeted the development of a long-term option for high-yield but low-cost industrial production of solar panels from raw materials. According to the team, these can be found in amorphous silicon solar cells and microcrystalline silicon tandem cells. The upshot is energy that is much more efficient.

However, Milan Vanecek, who led the photovoltaic group at the Institute of Physics in Prague, pointed out a weakness of these cells: the stable panel efficiency is not nearly as high as the efficiency generated by crystalline wafer-based silicon, the item du jour.

'To make amorphous and microcrystalline silicon cells more stable, they're required to be very thin because of tight spacing between electrical contacts, and the resulting optical absorption isn't sufficient,' explains Dr Vanecek. 'They're basically planar devices. Amorphous silicon has a thickness of 200 to 300 nanometres, while microcrystalline silicon is thicker than 1 micrometre.'

This sophisticated design, however, is centred on optically thick cells that are 'strongly absorbing', and the distance between the electrodes is steady.

'Our new 3D design of solar cells relies on the mature, robust absorber deposition technology of plasma-enhanced chemical vapour deposition, which is a technology already used for amorphous silicon-based electronics produced for liquid crystal displays,' the Czech researcher says. 'We just added a new nanostructured substrate for the deposition of the solar cell.'

The researchers explain that the nanostructured substrate encompasses zinc oxide (ZnO) nanocolumns or a honeycomb array of microholes or nanoholes etched into the transparent conductive oxide layer. The team calls the latter design 'Swiss cheese'.

'This latter approach proved successful for solar cell deposition,' Dr Vanecek points out. 'The potential of these efficiencies is estimated within the range of present multicrystalline wafer solar cells, which dominate solar cell industrial production. And the significantly lower cost of Micromorph panels, with the same panel efficiency as multicrystalline silicon panels (12% to 16%), could boost its industrial-scale production.'

The team said that they will continue their work to optimise and raise efficiency even further.
