Medina County machinists wanted

Two leaders of local machine shops are worried about the future of their industry—not because of off shoring but because they can’t find local talent to fill positions.

David Sattler, president of Sattler Companies in Sharon Center and president of the Akron Chapter of the National Tooling and Machining Association said this is a serious problem.

“Right now there are over 600,000 job opportunities in our industry alone across the country,” he said. “The other problem is that within the next five years they predict that we could lose up to 40 percent of our workforce to retirement. The biggest problem we face is filling these voids and filling the programs is an image problem. Sattler and Jeb Works, R&D Prototype Shop Manager for OrthoHelix Surgical Designs Inc., have been working with the Medina County Career Center to recruit graduates into the industry.

Works said the students at MCCC are learning the manual machining basics and how to program and use the computer integrated machinery commonly used in the industry today.Offers Art Reproductions Fine Art oilpaintings Reproduction, Administrators from the career center have visited the two companies and Works and Sattler are visiting classrooms to correct the false stereotype that these jobs are scarce and unsafe.

According to Sattler many of the machining jobs transferred overseas are returning to the United States and he’s afraid the industry may miss the opportunity to keep the jobs from leaving again.

“In addition to the current and future opportunities, many companies are starting to reshore their work,” he said. “Work that had left this country is starting to come back and that is creating additional opportunities. If we can not find the workforce to fill these jobs we may lose the work again only to never see it return. “Manufacturing is a ‘value-added’ process, where an end product is worth more than the raw materials needed to produce it,To interact with beddinges,” said Works. “Economically speaking, manufacturing is a wealth producing sector of the economy. If products are exported to other countries who then pay us more than they cost us, we are better off. I believe that manufacturing is something our communities and our country must excel at if we are to prosper in the future, and machining is integral to manufacturing either directly or behind the scenes.”

He added there are opportunities for males and females and a person who excels at machining will have skills valued in many other industries.

Works continued, “It is not a mundane occupation, but rather one where creativity, problem solving abilities and attention to detail are all important. It is ‘real’ work that produces solid, tangible products. A career in machining/manufacturing can be very rewarding both mentally and financially, and parents should encourage their children to pursue their interest in it.”
