Thompson Investment Castings plans relocation to Old Dover Road in Rochester

Haley has worked at Thompson Center Arms/TIC as an environmental engineer since 1985, and Stone was brought in by Smith & Wesson in 2007 to be general manager of the complex after they purchased it that year.

S&W announced in December of 2010 that it had decided to move gun production out of Rochester to its headquarters in Springfield, Mass., but indicated that it was seeking a buyer for the foundry operation.

In anticipation of this, TIC is building up what Haley calls "a bridging inventory," and to accomplish this, nine temporary workers are being added to the current workforce of 47 people.

"A year from now we will have over 50 people and we'd like to hire 12 or more as the business gets going," said Haley.

At present, about 70 percent of TIC business comes from gun manufacturers, including 30 percent from S&W, with whom Haley and Stone have very cordial relations.

It is the aim of the company, especially now that it has attained 9001 certification, to expand the customer base and the product range it produces. TIC, according to Haley, is known for its high quality standards and its ability to cast metals from intricate and complex molds to extremely demanding specifications..

Solar idea becomes solar reality

Kenny Kingstrom cannot wait to see his energy meter turn the other way.

That's because he has installed a large solar-power array on his three-acre property along U.S. Highway 69. Instead of his meter showing only watts used, it sometimes will turn back, showing the watts generated.

But first, Alliant Energy will have to install a bidirectional meter.

It is not a solar panel. It is actually 24 solar panels, or modules, each of them 3 feet by 5 feet. "His main intention is leaving the least footprint possible in this world," MaChar said.

She said the motivation for her husband has never been savings. She said environmental stewardship is important for him. He was recycling before recycling programs existed.

The couple has traveled a few times to the Midwest Renewable Energy Fair in Custer, Wis., near Stevens Point, and they had an interest in the possibilities of solar stemming from those trips. And the price of solar has really dropped.

Installation began in November and wrapped up in January. Brother-in-law Brad Sickenger and Cargill co-worker Kevin Levorson helped the Kingstroms with much of the hard work. And it still isn't on. That's going to happen in the next week or two.

Gamer said the solar equipment is assembled in Eugene, Ore., and made from Chinese parts. The glass and aluminum, however, are American.

He said each module generates DC currency. The standard method would have required the modules to generate over a set amount before converting it to AC power, which is what is sent to the power grid. That means people with solar panels often found themselves not generating power until about 10 a.m.

But the modules at the Kingstroms' place have a new method, Gamer said. Microinverters on the back of each one convert the power to AC at a lower amplitude.

"When the sun comes up, you're ready to produce power," he said.

The technology comes from a California company called Enphase Energy.

Gamer said 15 years ago, people using solar power had to store power in large quantities of batteries. Now, state law allows homeowners that can generate power -- be it by hydro, wind or any method -- to connect to the grid without going through the long process required for, as examples, a wind farm or a coal plant. The threshold is 40 kilowatts or fewer.

It's called the grid-tied electrical system. Instead of keeping power in batteries, homeowners who generate power add their load to the power grid.

Gamer said this actually helps power companies and their customers.

"What you are doing for them is peak-shaving," he said.

The utility companies have to pay premium fees to acquire power during peak-usage times. The power the Kingstroms generate might not be much in the grand scheme of things, but every drop in the bucket helps. The power generated by homeowners -- power that couldn't possibly be more than the demand -- flattens the peaks. It means there is power being generated that the utility companies don't have to pay that premium fee for, lessening everyone's costs.

Kenny had to locate a spot. He couldn't place panels on his roof, because his house faces east and west. South is the best direction for sun. Gamer took readings on various places on his property. They got a setback variance from the county, four trees were felled, and though the garage might look close, it doesn't cast a shadow on the array.

Through the process, Kenny has enjoyed learning. He said he is a hands-on learner.

Solar is one of the few power sources that doesn't seek to boil water into steam -- even nuclear does that. And solar is the only power source that doesn't make something spin, like wind and dams.

The solar modules collect all visible light, plus a little more, Gamer said. They agitate electrons in the silicone, which forces a DC current.

There is a federal tax credit Kingstrom is planning to take advantage of, possibly even sell. Some power companies offer a credit, too, but not Alliant Energy.

Gamer said a typical home has a demand of 10 kilowatts per hour. Kenny said he hopes to cut his usage in half.

It was craftsmanship like this that Lynwen Barnsley and her late husband Mike fell in love with when they moved to Swansea from London 16 years ago.

"Mike got a job at Swansea University so we were looking for somewhere to live. We could only afford a tiny house with two and bit rooms in London, and when we first came to see this place I couldn't believe that we could afford to live here," she said.

"I've got used to the size of the rooms now but every time someone comes to visit I am reminded of how spacious everything is."

"It's a wonderful house in a great location. The street is so quiet and peaceful and yet it's just few minutes' walk from the centre of Uplands and also within walking distance of both town and the beach," said Lynwen.

"I will be sad to leave but the house is too big for me and I need to downsize. It's quite a unique house on this street in that it has retained so many of its original features.

" A lot of people took out the doors in the 60s and 70s when they were considered old fashioned, for example, but thankfully they have survived here. I hope that the next owners will also respect the house and its character."

The Carousel of Progress Cast

But that is just the start for a software engine so powerful that it can read a musical score and translate it into sound, or listen to sound and transform it into a musical score.

As Taub, who lives in Princeton, sees it, MuseAmi could transform how people learn, sing, record, and perform all kinds of music. And it could eventually be at the heart of devices that will hear words spoken in one language and play them back - in real time - in another.

Big ideas are the lifeblood of the Consumer Electronics Show - an event that's known to geeks and engineers everywhere simply as CES and that for a few days each year turns Sin City into Technopolis.

CES is a glitzy stage and showcase for many of the biggest names in technology. But it is also a magnet for budding entrepreneurs, inventors, and start-ups that want to change the world, or at least a small slice of it, and perhaps make a fortune along the way.

Some, such as FreeOneHand, are here to show off inventions that, strictly speaking, are not electronic at all but capitalize on devices such as the iPhone and iPad. A spin-off of a Northeast Philadelphia injection-molding company, Engineered Plastics, FreeOneHand developed an ergonomically improved iPad holder. With the $40 device, the company says, an iPad user can read for hours without the usual fatigue.

Others, such as Chalfont-based Telikin, are trying to carve a niche directly into the businesses of industry giants. They also come with features especially appealing to newbies - or to children or grandchildren who might want to buy one for a family member.

"We have a lot of baby boomer customers who have parents who want to see pictures but are leery of Facebook," said sales manager Cheryl Lewis.

A large part of what matters at CES happens behind the scenes, however - the place where Bob Taub and a colleague met with representatives of some of the biggest names in the electronics and music businesses, although he is barred from naming names by nondisclosure agreements.

One clue came from where Taub camped out during his days at the show: at the booth of Qualcomm, a leading chip-maker that makes the brains for iPhones, Androids, and other cutting-edge devices.

The booth displayed a demonstration product that MuseAmi created with Qualcomm, which has technology that allows two people using separate microphones to participate together in an activity. LeCun's networks play a key role in software that can distinguish between a genuine signature and a forgery with nearly 100 percent accuracy. Taub's musical prowess certainly helps. A graduate of Princeton University and the Juilliard School, he has performed since the 1980s with the Philadelphia Orchestra and other leading orchestras around the world.

So, undoubtedly, does a lifelong fondness for tinkering with things, such as the vintage motorbikes he has rebuilt.

Taub said MuseAmi analyzes six parameters of music: frequency; rhythm; note clarity; volume; and vibrato. Its intelligence is so sophisticated that it should be able to identify a song even when a bad singer is attempting it, he said.

But MuseAmi's most impressive feature may be the simplicity of its software. Taub said ImproVox, which contains many of MuseAmi's key features, uses only about 20 percent of an iPhone's processing power.

A growing pile of trash that is being ignored by the city is creating an eyesore, some angry Montrose residents said.

On any given day, you'll find Katherine Phillips strolling the tree-lined streets of Montrose with her dogs, taking in the sights, sounds and something more.

"This trash pile has been here for a couple of months and it's still growing," said Victoria Grant, another Montrose resident. "A toilet was added just a week ago."

Grant says she has called the city, and then some.

"We flagged them down and asked them to please pick it up, and all they did was pick up a couple of piles of fresh branches and leave" said Grant.

Amazon 7-inch and 10-inch Android Honeycomb Tablets Set for August Roll Out

It’s been quite a while since we started seeing info on Amazon’s new tablet flowing in. The much-spoken about Honeycomb slates – not one but two – from the house of Amazon will start rolling out this summer. The company, which is the latest to step into Android Honeycomb shoes, has announced that the coming August will see the launch of their tablets.   


Taiwanese component makers are said to be supplying parts for the tablet. We hear that with their collaboration, Amazon is aiming to give away about 4 million units globally, by the year end. So, this holiday season will find Amazon busy shipping 700,000-800,000 units a month, of their Android 3.1 line of tablets.

Amazon is supposedly planning to roll out two models of their device – the 7-inch Coyote and 10-inch Hollywood models. These models are rumored to be powered by processors from the Texas Instruments stables.

And that’s not all; the devices will have touch panels from the Taiwan-based company, Wintek. The LCD driver ICs will be supplied by ILI Technology and Quanta Computer has taken over the product’s assembly.

Going by what we hear, it seems Amazon is considering its Honeycomb tablet a serious business. We expect the company to take a leaf out of Kindle, and provide the devices with movie streaming service and mainstream recognition.  If that happens, then, with this venture, Amazon might well have a winner on their shelves.

So, keep your fingers crossed, or rather open, to grab one this summer. In the meantime, we will now go hunting to know what is on the pricing front.

Microsoft lands Skype; plus: Your music, Google's cloud

Microsoft -- the Redmond, Wash., software megabehemoth -- today announced its biggest acquisition ever: It intends to buy Skype -- the Internet telephone service once owned by eBay (EBAY) -- for $8.5 billion.

"Skype is a phenomenal service that is loved by millions of people around the world," Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer said in a statement announcing the deal. "Together we will create the future of real-time communications so people can easily stay connected to family, friends, clients and colleagues anywhere in the world."

Microsoft intends to maintain Skype as an independent business unit, with Skype CEO Tony Bates becoming president of the new Microsoft Skype Division. "Together, we will be able to accelerate Skype's plans to extend our global community and introduce new ways for everyone to communicate and collaborate," Bates said.

The acquisition returns Skype -- founded in 2003 by Niklas Zennstrom and Janus Friss based on peer-to-peer technology created for their Kazaa music downloading service -- to ownership by a corporate tech giant. San Jose online auction powerhouse eBay, you might recall, bought Skype in 2005 for $3.1 billion; eBay later said that it paid too much in that deal.

By 2009, though, eBay sold a controlling stake in Skype -- in a deal worth about $2 billion -- to investors including two Silicon Valley venture capital firms, Silver Lake Partners and Andreessen Horowitz, as well as the Canada Pension Plan Investment Board.

"Today, I tip my hat to an old rival, Microsoft," Andreessen Horowitz partner Ben Horowitz wrote on his blog. "By acquiring Skype, Microsoft becomes a much stronger player in mobile and the clear market leader in Internet voice and video communications. More importantly, Microsoft gets a team, ably lead by the exceptional Tony Bates, that can compete with anyone."

On the GigaOm blog, Om Malik suggested the deal could be good for Palo Alto social networking powerhouse Facebook. "With Microsoft," Malik wrote, Facebook "gets the best of both worlds: It gets access to Skype assets (Microsoft is an investor in Facebook) and it gets to keep Skype away from Google."
