After watching a pilot that inspired more groans across the nation than Statler and Waldorf could have ever mustered on the Muppet Show, I was looking forward to a much stronger second outing of NBC’s Lost-lite spectacular. This week instead we got served up another lukewarm helping of television that deserves to take its rightful place among the pantheon of early 90’s era TV syndication. Don’t worry. I’m not talking Star Trek: The Next Generation. I’m talking M.A.N.T.I.S.

But there sure are plenty of sword fights, so there’s that at least.

Facebook can be powerful law enforcement tools

To head off problems such as the unruly, violent crowds that descended on Towson and downtown Baltimore this year, police departments locally and across the nation are seeking new ways to tap into Facebook, Twitter and other social media sites.

Baltimore police reviewed Twitter posts during the city's Sailabration and Grand Prix race to get real-time information about possible criminal activity. In Tampa, police monitored Internet posts for the Republican National Convention, looking to spot problems before they arose. And in Cincinnati, police make similar efforts to prepare for major events such as Oktoberfest and a Reds playoff game.

But sorting through the vast amount of information and deciding what's relevant is a daunting proposition — one that may take up more police resources and expertise than can be spared.

"We've seen agencies monitor social media at mainly large-scale events," said Nancy Kolb, senior program manager at the International Association of Chiefs of Police.

She said departments have been able to identify concerns — from traffic to safety — and watch crowds via the Internet. But she added, "It's certainly not the norm. Departments generally don't have the resources to monitor social media 24/7."

Most police departments are not using social media sites to their full advantage, said Dennis Jay Kenney, a professor at the John Jay College of Criminal Justice in New York. "For the most part, they're not doing much of anything," he said, adding that most tend to use social media for public-relations purposes. "It's a quick-acting tool that police departments aren't quick at."

Police have blamed social media sites for luring large crowds to Towson and Baltimore — incidents that left police overwhelmed and scrambling to restore order. Our use of social media will always be complaints- or investigation-driven. We use it to investigate crimes, assess threats."

Kenney said that monitoring social media is easier for major events, "when you actually know who will be posting." In the Towson situation, he said, police might not have picked up information unless they were aware of the event ahead of time.

But some say that with a little training and understanding, social media can prove very useful to departments.

Lauri Stevens, is a social media specialist whose company, LAwS Communications, is producing the Social Media the Internet and Law Enforcement Conference in Sunnyvale, Calif., in February to educate law enforcement on the use of social media.

She said it's important for police departments to become active online, but usually, they only become engaged beyond public-relations efforts when a serious incident occurs.

"It's like getting a town hall to put a traffic light in," she said. "Something bad has to happen first."

According to a history, compiled by the late Hazel Ervin, and which was continued by the late Frances Miner, Methodism began in Cape Girardeau in 1809. At that time, there was a circuit organized known as Cape Girardeau Circuit. This circuit included a vast section of Southeast Missouri.

Cape Girardeau was made a mission station with Thomas Wright as first pastor. In 1819, a little church was built near where the River Campus stands now. By the summer of 1912, the building was completed and they asked the Bishop and Presiding Elder to send them a pastor.

The Rev. O.J. Ferguson, who was attending the State Teachers College was appointed as the first pastor. Early records also show K.V. Probst as a pastor in 1912, and he must have assisted Rev. Ferguson.

The church remained at that first location until the early part of the year of 1915 when the congregation decided that the church building should be moved further west because of the steady growth of the city in that direction. A lot was purchased at the corner of Maple Avenue and Ellis Street. The basement was dug by the men of the church and a few others who were interested in seeing the church moved. These men did the work mostly after their regular working hours and the little frame church was moved to the new location in the middle of 1916. The South Cape Methodist Church continued to make steady growth in 1941, it was decided that a larger church was needed and the cornerstone was laid on June 15, 1941. On October 4, 1945, there was a mortgage burning and dedication of the church with Bishop Ivan Lee Holt being present for the dedication of the church.

This building was badly damaged by fire in 1958 and it was necessary to rebuild and rededicate it. While this work was being done, services were held in the Old Jefferson School Building on the corner of Jefferson and Ellis Street.

In December of 1991, a difficult decision to move was again made by the congregation. The first worship service in the Jean Ann sanctuary was held on Sunday, January 9, 1994. In August of 1994, in a church wide decision, the new name of the old Maple Avenue Methodist Church became Maple United Methodist Church. Federal Attorney-General Nicola Roxon is canvassing a further expansion of surveillance powers, most controversially a requirement that telecommunications and internet service providers retain at least two years of data for access by government agencies.

Security and privacy are in the balance as the Federal Parliament's secretive joint committee on intelligence and security considers Australia's future digital surveillance regime.

Australia was slow to get into the business of telecommunications interception. Alexander Graham Bell's invention was nearly 70 years old before Australian security authorities took advantage of the telephone as a surveillance device. But since then they've never looked back.

David Forbes Martyn was a highly accomplished Scottish physicist who brought radar technology to Australia in 1939. He was the first chief of CSIRO's radiophysics laboratory at Sydney University, a fellow of the Royal Society and a founder of the Australian Academy of Science. In early 1944, Brigadier Bill Simpson, director-general of the wartime Commonwealth Security Service, ordered the interception of Martyn's phone, the phone of his fiancee, Margot Adams, and installation of listening devices in the Sydney apartment of their close friend, Shanyi Maier, the Chinese wife of a German internee and alleged femme fatale.

But she was no spy. Six decades later the files were transferred to the National Archives and made publicly available. Long divorced, remarried and widowed, Shanyi Balogh, as she was then, was still alive and well, and living in the same apartment. She read some of the transcripts with deep distress, indeed broke down and cried at the violation of her privacy.

Australia's first technical surveillance operation was judged a success, even though nothing of security significance was uncovered. Brigadier Simpson thought the exercise had been ''first class from a technical viewpoint''.

There was no espionage, either. However, Martyn's career was severely damaged by suspicions that the Security Service never thought necessary to dispel. Many years later, embittered and in deteriorating mental health, he was consumed by constant fears that he was under surveillance and took his own life.

The Security Service's successor, the Australian Security Intelligence Organisation, quickly turned to telephone interception in its post-war investigations of Soviet spies in Australia. There was no legal authority for what were called ''special facilities'', but Labor prime minister Ben Chifley gave the go ahead in July 1949 for ASIO to tap the phone of Walter Clayton, an Australian Communist Party operative suspected, rightly, of being involved in Soviet espionage.

Within a year ASIO was phone-tapping 14 people. By the end of a decade they had tapped 174 telephones, mainly belonging to Soviet diplomats and Australian communists.

Anxious to put this growing surveillance activity on a legal footing, attorney-general Sir Garfield Barwick presented a top-secret submission to the cabinet of Sir Robert Menzies in February 1960.

''The usefulness of interception of telephones by the Security Service is undoubted,'' Barwick wrote. ''[T]he obtaining of factual evidence of subversion, espionage and sabotage is one of the most difficult aspects of investigation … One of the most vulnerable points in so far as the detection of these activities is communication … Telephone and mail interception, therefore, become of paramount importance.''

Barwick referred to the ''natural disfavour, not to say aversion, with which people regard this form of assault on the privacy of the telephone'', but concluded that interception was ''indispensable to the security of the nation.Check out the collection crystal mosaic of Marazzi.''

There were to be legislative safeguards. Subject to authorisation by warrant from the attorney-general, intercept operations were only to be carried out by ASIO for national security purposes. ''In my opinion, it is quite clear that the Commonwealth cannot carry the responsibility of providing telephone [intercept] facilities for state purposes - even for the detection of crime,'' Barwick added.

One hundred and sixty warrants were issued for interception operations, codenamed ''Bugle'', over the next 12 years. For most of the two-decade life of Peregrine Financial Group, a leading independent futures brokerage, founder and chief executive Russell Wasendorf Sr. was taking hundreds of millions of dollars of his customers' money to cover losses and live large.

His dual life came to light after Wasendorf, 64, tried to commit suicide outside his headquarters in July. Authorities discovered a four-page confession letter describing how he used a post-office box, a scanner and basic software to hide his theft for years. The Commodity Futures Trading Commission accused him of making off with more than $200 million of customer money. Last week, he pleaded guilty to mail fraud, lying to regulators and embezzling customer funds, crimes that could put him in jail for 50 years.

Interviews with dozens of former employees, colleagues and associates, as well as court filings and company documents seen by Reuters, offer the most complete account yet of Wasendorf and his career. He is a man who came from little, made it big and then dipped ever deeper into customer accounts to finance a facade of seemingly unlimited wealth.

Part of Wasendorf's life was an open book: He brought celebrity speakers such as Ted Koppel to industry events and wrote columns for a glossy magazine he owned. Toward the end of last decade, he relocated his headquarters from Chicago back to Cedar Falls, bought a private jet and built a $24 million state-of-the-art office, touting the move as a template for revitalizing small-town America.

Less known were the personal tensions he faced, including a split with a brother, two divorces, a last-minute mystery wedding in Las Vegas and seething resentment against establishment rivals in Chicago. His pastor says Wasendorf knew his ruse was doomed several years before it unraveled. A rift emerged with his only son,Airgle has mastered the art of indoor tracking, Russ Jr., who warned the Iowa shift was an expensive folly - and prepared this summer to move to Australia.

"Russ Jr. told him it was a mistake - that it was a mistake to spend $24 million on the building and a mistake to buy that jet," said Nicholas Iavarone, Russ Jr.'s lawyer and a longtime counsel to Peregrine. "It didn't matter.… He wanted to go back to Cedar Falls to be the big man."

Today, Wasendorf sits in solitary confinement, and under suicide watch, at Linn County Correctional Facility in Cedar Rapids, Iowa. Authorities have found only $181 million of an estimated $400 million in customer funds Peregrine was supposed to have on hand.

Wasendorf and his lawyer, a public defender, didn't respond to requests for comment. Beyond the confession letter and the plea agreement, neither has made any public comments to the media.

The youngest son of a meatpacking plant foreman, Russell Ralph Wasendorf was born in 1948, named after a pastor and his son who offered the Wasendorfs shelter in their attic when money grew tight.

Arthur Wasendorf died when his son was in kindergarten. Russell's widowed mother, Ida, landed a job in marketing for a local securities broker to keep the family fed.

Wasendorf gravitated toward the arts. At high school in Marion, Iowa, he performed in plays at local churches. While at the University of Northern Iowa, he joined a local artist collective, learned to use audio-visual equipment and worked on documentaries about New Mexico's Pueblo Indians. That led to "a short, but successful career in the motion picture business" prior to entering the futures industry, according to a note he published in the glossy magazine he later founded, Stocks, Futures and Options, or SFO.Different Sizes and Colors can be made with different stone mosaic designs.

The peak came in 1974, two years after he left university: a 20-minute documentary on soybeans titled "The Gold That Grows," which later won an award from the Council on International Non-Theatrical Events.

Apple's iOS 6 is more of an incremental update than a game-changer, but with more than 200 features there is plenty to like here.Choose from our large selection of cable ties. Rather, Apple again has managed to smooth out the rough edges and offer a solid experience across the board.

With the Google Maps app gone from the device, Apple now has its own map app, built in-house, and it's a big improvement on a few fronts, but falls short in several others. Vector-based graphics make text and details easy to read, and swiping to pan and two-finger touch rotation are both very smooth -- even at full zoom.

On newer iOS devices like the iPhone 4S, iPhone 5, and the new iPad, you also get 3D views, directions with voice, and flyover features. The experience of virtually touring a city is breathtaking in that "Look what technology can do!" sense, but its actual usefulness in your everyday iOS device use is questionable. The 3D views have an alternate use, however. The directions with voice features let you set a destination, with Siri dictation on newer devices, then switch to 3D to get a nice-looking illustrated view (if your iPhone is mounted on your dashboard, for example) as you get turn-by-turn directions on your way to your destination. While this feature is extremely useful and well-thought-out, Android phones have been able to provide turn-by-turn directions for a long time. But like many of the additions in iOS 6, this feature will be very welcome for people with iOS devices despite being nothing new to users of other smartphones. Maps also uses real-time traffic conditions to show where the slow spots are and will give you new routes based on live traffic data. Again, this is not a new feature for smartphones, but will still be very useful to iOS users.

There is one major feature that is missing from the new Maps app. When you ask for directions, you still have the option to choose your mode of transport, but you'll only be able to easily access driving and walking directions--public transportation requires an outside app. The former Google-powered offering had buttons for both public transit and walking included, with time estimates for each. This is a major omission because obviously not everyone is going to be traveling by car. Hopefully this is something Apple will add to the app in a future update. The sooner, the better.

I have to note, too, that for all the good things about Apple's Maps, it has a flip side, in that it takes people away from the Google mapping services that they've long used. So not only is Google Maps no longer integrated, but also you're further walled into Apple's ecosystem.

Only a day after iOS 6's release, reports came flooding in about Apple's Maps app having significant problems with missing cities along with distorted buildings and landmarks. We are currently performing some tests of our own, with the Turn-by-turn Field Test linked above and another test of map details we will link as soon as we finish testing. Check back later for more details.

Launched alongside the iPhone 4S, Siri was one of the most talked-about (no pun intended) features of Apple's previous handset. Siri was impressive, but limited in its debut, acting mostly as a way to answer trivia questions and inspire viral videos of people saying, "Look what I made Siri say!" It certainly had practical uses, such as finding nearby restaurants, accessing Wolfram Alpha, and giving you meeting reminders, but users seemed to focus more on trying to stump Siri or simply relishing the novelty of a phone that could talk back to you. On the Galaxy S3, Samsung has a similar app called S Voice and CNET's Jessica Dolcourt has compared their features.

With iOS 6, Apple has given Siri features to make it more of an integral method for interacting with the iPhone. With the added capabilities of opening apps, remembering recent questions, and more integration with commonly used functions on your iPhone, Siri will be much more useful across the board. You'll now be able to ask Siri for sports scores and get a nice-looking scoreboard right in the Siri window that you can tap for more info. Similarly, ask Siri about movies and she'll bring up a Rotten Tomatoes movie-listing interface without having to open external apps. New Yelp integration will give you more information about restaurants, such as hours and cuisine types. None of this is groundbreaking, but it's certainly useful. Of course you can still make calls, set reminders and alarms, check the weather, and schedule meetings. But added functionality also lets you get directions (as mentioned in the Maps section above), post to Facebook or Twitter, dictate texts and emails, and other helpful things.

The new Eyes Free features announced at WWDC will bring Siri into your car, but they're not available yet at the time of the iOS 6 release. Apple is reportedly working with car manufacturers such as Toyota, GM, Mercedes, BMW, Honda, and Audi to let you use Siri from the steering wheel. You'll get spoken alerts without the screen lighting up, and the car integration means that you'll be able to use Siri safely and without taking your hands off the wheel. We still have no hard release date, but Apple said its partners would complete integration for new vehicles within the next 12 months (counting from June).

Smart move

During the halcyon summer of that year when his life and work appeared to be coalescing so well, he saw on the beach at Ostia, a man lying on his back with his feet in the air balancing an inflated rubber ball. Converging this image with a painting by Picasso he remembered, Acrobat on a ball, in which a large muscular figure with his back to us sits on a cube observing a lithe young female poised on a ball, Smart made a small pen-and-ink sketch which he turned into a masterful painting four years later. He called it Morning practice, Baia.

This disarmingly simple work holds a central position within the entire span of Smart's painting career, from his earliest compositions of the city of Adelaide where he was born, to the very latest image, Labyrinth, painted recently in Tuscany where he now lives.

Exactly halfway between these two extremities of a lifetime, Morning practice, Baia is an essential image of the artist himself. A man practises with geometry, fascinated by its capacity to measure the meaning of existence, whilst enjoying life-enhancing sunlight illuminating the modern walls of what used to be an ancient fleshpot of the Roman Empire on the Bay of Naples.

What was the genesis of Smart's preoccupation with parallel lines, cubes, spheres, curves and rectangles as the foundation of his visual language? And from where came his inclination to transform a cool, dystopian vision of the 20th-century city and its technologies into a startling new aesthetic?

We have to start in Adelaide where the young Smart absorbed vital clues from the more worldly individuals of the local scene. It is interesting how many of these were strong women.

One was the French-trained Marie Tuck, who taught at the South Australian School of Arts and Crafts, and gave Smart his first instruction in oil painting. She imbued in him a method of laying out his palette so that it might be used like an instrument as instinctively as touch-typing.

Another was Dorrit Black who, after studying with André Lhote and Albert Gleizes in Paris, returned to Australia a disciple of cubism.Browse the Best Selection of buy mosaic and Accessories with FREE Gifts. Her key philosophy was that a painting was something to be made or designed.

But even more interesting is the work of a woman who was born on the opposite side of the planet and died long before his time. Marie Bashkirtseff was a young Russian painter who went to Paris to study at the Acadaacémie Julian, one of the rare art schools that took female enrolments, and proved to be a prodigious talent. By the time of her death from tuberculosis in 1884, aged twenty-five, she had established herself as a powerful intellectual feminist. But a tragedy exceeding that of her short life occurred during the Second World War when the Nazis destroyed most of her paintings.

A final masterpiece survived upon which her reputation rests: A meeting, today housed at the Musée d'Orsay. Smart's parents brought back as a souvenir of their European sojourn, with infant Jeffrey in tow, a coloured print of this painting which they hung at home in Hawthorn. Over the years Smart studied it carefully, the only image of an actual painting, along with framed sepia photographs of Rome, he remembers hanging in the house.

The synergy between Bashkirtseff's image and Smart's evolution as a painter is astonishing. A meeting depicts a group of Parisian slum children congregating on a street corner; but the most galvanising aspect of the composition is the background of weatherworn palings comprising a fence of verticals, horizontals and broken triangles, and the distant sun-kissed facade of a building rendered into simple flat rectangles. The urban geometry is so emphatic, it exudes a sense of discovery that was about to take the young Bashkirtseff forward, only to be cut short by her death.

In 1948 Smart worked his way on a long, arduous journey to Europe by cargo ship. Two pilgrimages were of lasting significance. The first was his enrolment at the school of Fernand Léger, whom Smart greatly admired. The second was a visit to Cezanne's studio in Aix where he spent the best part of a day meditating on the motifs famously recognisable in the French master's paintings.

His dedication to Cezanne is also related to the French master's dogged belief in the virtual priesthood of painting against all distractions, particularly commerce. Smart was destined to have many commercial exhibitions during his career,Find detailed product information for Hot Sale howo spareparts Radiator. but with pragmatic determination he would eventually invest in property and shares to avoid being stressed by the necessity of painting for a living.

Smart was back in Adelaide by the end of 1950. But his intention was still on track, as he had previously declared with confidence to his students in Adelaide: to live in Sydney for ten years and marshal his resources for a permanent move to Italy.

The early 1960s were good years as Smart held his own against the force of abstraction beginning to invade so many of his contemporaries. Two brilliant compositions stand out: Coogee Baths, winter (1961); and the consummate Cahill Expressway (1962), focused on a traffic construction in the city centre between the old State Library and the Royal Botanic Gardens. A lone man stands in the picture. Portly, suited, with one arm hidden or missing, he stands where no pedestrian should, next to the road built to take cars at speed into the underpass towards Sydney Harbour Bridge. Is he Prufrock? Is he Mr Eugenides, Eliot's symbol of the decay of Europe? Is he us; or Smart himself? As always, the artist says the figure is essentially there for the sake of pictorial scale, as in a landscape by Poussin, or Claude.

Both these paintings made it obvious Smart was ready for the phenomenon of modern Italy, to witness the phoenix of a new world rising up to vie with the old in a spectacularly unexpected revelation of beauty. Moreover he now felt validated by Bryan Robertson's inclusion of his work in the groundbreaking Recent Australian Painting exhibition at the Whitechapel Gallery, London, in 1961. That show was packed with abstraction, but it is surprising how many of the artists were figurative.

In 1963 Smart decided it was time for the big move from Australia, when Europe was taking notice of Australian art in a way it would never do again. Near the end of the 1960s Smart discovered an old farmhouse - Posticcia Nuova - in Tuscany near a village called Pieve a Presciano, not far from Arezzo. A successful exhibition at Leicester Galleries in London in 1970 helped pay for it, and after a year of renovation he moved there permanently at the end of 1971.Where can i get a reasonable price dry cabinet?

Humming with comings and goings while Smart worked at sacrosanct times each day in the sanctuary of his studio, separated from the house by a terrace, Posticcia Nuova became over the ensuing decades a fecund source of iconic paintings. The first big canvas to emerge was Factory staff, Erehwyna (1972) ("Anywhere" spelt backwards). There were of course continuing images of beloved fences, with clever concoctions of raking light and visual codes in Corrugated Gioconda (1976) and The construction fence (1978), as well as the sheer quotidian simplicity of The wooden fence, St Kilda (2009). These were motifs he could find anywhere in the world, but at Posticcia Nuova Smart was surrounded by enough subjects from the ordinary to the sublime without having to travel very far. Indeed in some paintings he could combine extremes within easy reach.

In the late evening of his career, fascinating questions continue to hover over his achievement. One is his consistent assertion that he does not like much of his own work, evidenced by a capacity to destroy a good part of it, usually by burning. Each year little more than a handful of paintings, created through a time-honoured process of drawing and grisaille, have survived his fierce self-criticism, tantalising him to hope that perhaps the next one might arrive at the elusive port of perfection.

In 2011, largely confined to a wheelchair, Smart declared his retirement from painting. Then, a few months later, he found a subject he wanted to attempt, Labyrinth, with the classical connotation of that title of a spiritual journey. Responding to a hedge maze he saw illustrated on the cover of a book, his enthusiasm was resurrected. As ever,Airgle has mastered the art of indoor tracking, he set out to complete a painting equal to any he had done, if not better. It was never just another picture for sale; it was always about one more synthesis of a dream.

He expanded the scope of the original motif, changing the leafy maze into a stone labyrinth and stretching it to the far horizon beneath a steel-blue sky. At the time he was reading a novel based on the life of the writer H.G. Wells, once proclaimed "prophet of tomorrow'', who between the two world wars investigated one of Smart's own intellectual influences, J.W. Dunne, the Anglo-Irish aeronautical engineer who delved into parapsychology. Dunne claimed to be able to prove that dreams had the capacity to represent the future as well as the past and present, and that these three states were in fact one and the same. Smart referenced this by placing a portrait of Wells in Labyrinth (2011). Thus again we are stimulated to ponder, as with Morning practice, Baia (1969), the significance of timeless light illuminating a man in the crosshairs of the Golden Mean, surrounded by the boundaries of his science at a moment that stands for all moments.

Gulf grows between strong and weak Chinese firms

Ace, which said it’s seeing more than 25% growth this year on top of a record 2011, claims that investments in technology like automation and plating of plastics, along with a push into new locations like a moulding factory in Anhui Province, are giving it new opportunities.

Ace CEO Jack Yeung also is chairman of the Hong Kong Mould and Die Council, and he said from that position, he sees a split in South China’s plastic moulding and mouldmaking industry.

“We’ve seen a lot of the smaller shops who are less competitive or don’t have their niche technology, they are suffering now [and] are running at about 60 percent to 70 percent capacity,” Yeung said. “However, for the stronger companies, the bigger companies that have their core knowledge and customer base, they are all full. That trend is playing out in reports from other companies. China’s largest plastics equipment makers have all reported much tougher conditions lately, with rising wages and a slowing economy in China, along weak exports because of the euro zone crisis, taking a toll.

Hong Kong toy maker Kader Holdings said its contract manufacturing toy business saw sales down 25% in the first half of the year, to $20.2m, with the situation leading some competitors to shut down.

“The global economy is still affected by the uncertainties related to the European sovereign debt crisis,” the company said. “Together with rising operating costs, these factors pose potential challenges to the entire toy industry. Amid the difficult operating environment, a growing number of small-scale toy manufacturers were forced to leave the market.”

Others, however, reported rising sales.

Ningbo, Zhejiang province-based auto parts maker Minth said sales rose 17% in the first half, to $273.4m, as opportunities increased in overseas markets and investments in factories in Thailand and Mexico began to pay off.

Minth said profit rose 12%, with China’s domestic market showing modest growth, its Japanese customers seeing a recovery and the company landing new business with BMW.

Ace is also launching production of robotic insert moulding in Shanghai to automate production, and moving its injection moulding of engineering plastics to inland China at a new facility in Hefei, Anhui Province, Yeung said.

He spoke in an interview at a late August news conference for the Asiamold trade show, to be held 19-21 September in Guangzhou. The Hong Kong Mould and Die Council is an official supporter of the show.

He said tough financial conditions are causing customers to consolidate their supply base.

“A lot of the customers are asking for financial information before they place the order to insure [suppliers] are in a sound financial situation,Save up to 80% off Ceramic Tile and plastic moulds.” he said. “For the companies who can provide a very good report… these are the companies which the customer will be relying on. While consumer electronics markets in general are slower, companies like Samsung and Apple are strong, and the company is seeing opportunities in the car industry in the United States, Yeung said.

“We can see the Apple business is very good and the Samsung business is very good,” he said. “Automotive in China is a little slow but automotive in the US is still fairly strong. We can see there is a huge demand for moulds in the American market for automotive. It depends on which sector you are in and how diverse you are.”

Chilmark selectmen wrestle with library parking shortage

Chilmark selectmen Tuesday gave the green light to a Hollywood film crew to film in Menemsha this weekend, sank a proposal to purchase a new pump-out boat, and discussed ongoing parking problems at the town library.

Selectmen met with Ebba Hierta, the director of the town library, about the acute lack of parking at the library and by extension the Chilmark Community Center during the summer months.

"It is seriously infringing on our ability to serve our taxpayers. They are not able to get to the building during certain times of the week," Ms. Hierta said.

A letter to selectmen signed by members of the library board of trustees expressed concerns about parking problems for library patrons during the Martha's Vineyard Film Festival Wednesday film series and morning adult classes.

"We field complaints every week from residents and taxpayers who tell us they are frequently unable to get to the library on Wednesdays because every available parking space in town — at the library, Chilmark Community Center, post office, the school and the bank — is taken," the letter said.

Selectman chairman Jonathan Mayhew suggested that either the Community Center change the day of the film festival or the library change its hours.

Ms. Hierta said the library trustees were reluctant to change the hours of operation. "We have been asked to change the library hours. We talked about it, and we don't think it's appropriate for [the film festival] to ask the library to change."

Police Chief Brian Cioffi said he was working on the problem."I have talked to all parties involved and hopefully we can work out a scheduling solution so everybody is happy," he said.

Selectman Bill Rossi volunteered to talk to the various parties and hash out a workable solution.

"I think we can solve it if we all get together and talk about it. From my preliminary discussions with involved parties there seems to be a willingness to make this work," he said.The TagMaster Long Range hands free access System is truly built for any parking facility.

Selectmen then met with Mark Fitzgerald, representing HBO films, who was seeking permission to film in Menemsha this Saturday for four of five hours in the morning.

The film will star Larry David, seasonal Chilmark resident and star of HBO hit 'Curb Your Enthusiasm,' and will be about "green cars and trying to get off fossil fuels," Mr. Fitzgerald said.

The filming will not involve a large crew, with no actors other than Mr. David, and all the equipment will be staged in the Home Port parking lot. Mr. Fitzgerald said he already met with business owners to give them a heads-up about the filming.

Selectmen approved the request, but not before reminiscing about the town's previous brushes with Hollywood.

"[The Kevin Costner film] Message in a Bottle wanted to build a house on Vincent beach," selectman Warren Doty recalled. "And they had to go North Carolina to do that."

Selectmen then discussed a request from the board of health asking selectmen to consider buying a pump-out boat.

In a letter dated September 10, administrator Marina Lent states the board of health discussed available options to replace and upgrade the sewage pump-out facility at the town harbor.

"We welcome the opportunity to ensure the more consistent use of boat sewage holding tank pump-outs in the Chilmark harbor, rather than the continued direct dumping of fecal waste at sea, as this will clearly improve the quality of Chilmark coastal waters," the letter said, adding:

"The board of health is interested in exploring the option of a pump-out vessel. Please advise as to whether the Board of Selectmen would be amenable to this option."

In no uncertain terms, selectmen said they did not support purchasing a pump-out boat, and instead preferred to focus on improving a land-based or pier-based pump-out system.

"The one in Vineyard Haven services 150 boats," Mr. Doty said. "We have only 16 transient slips, we are not at the scale to have a pump-out boat. We should have a good pump-out facility – a land-based facility."

Mr. Mayhew agreed the town should focus efforts on improving the pier-based pump-out station already in place.

In other business, selectmen agreed to sign a letter drafted by the town of Tisbury to Gregory Bialecki, state secretary of Housing and Economic Development, in support of an application to the state to build a new connector road from State Road to Edgartown-Vineyard Haven Road.

That those decades were a golden age for photography goes almost without saying. All of us can summon a mental gallery of extraordinary images of the time - Woodstock,Save up to 80% off Ceramic Tile and plastic moulds. May ’68, Civil Rights Marches, Northern Ireland the list could go on ad nauseam - to the extent that an exhibition of this kind might seem superfluous. This show, however, isn’t quite what its rather vague sub-title might lead you to expect. Some, such as South Africa’s David Goldblatt, are already celebrated; others have been recently discovered by the West, including the Malian studio photographer Malick Sidibe, while others are pretty much unknown here, such as India’s Raghubir Singh and China’s Li Zhensheng. One, German artist Sigmar Polke, is hardly known as a photographer at all.

The common thread, we are told, is that these artists offer ’a history of photography through the photography of history’. Elsewhere we learn that they are purveyors of ’personal landscape’. But the great word that hangs over this exhibition - which it bend over backwards to avoid using - is photojournalism. All the photographers here relate, in one way or another, to that great tradition in which the photographer goes out to capture a slice of social reality in a stream of images that renders words superfluous.

What this exhibition gives us, by and large - and without ever spelling it out - is photojournalists’ personal work: not punchy stories grabbed in two or three day assignments, but projects that absorbed them over years, even decades, and pushed them to develop highly personal means of expression.

Whatever the oddities of the show’s conception, the cumulative effect of its artfully arranged, chapter-like sections is completely absorbing and often very moving.

He concentrates on the humanity of the subject, and it’s up to the viewer to provide context and judgement.

From Goldblatt’s stark black and white, we move to William Eggleston’s queasily lush Southern Gothic colour. His almost accidental images of battered Mississippi motel rooms and lonesome gas stations aren’t photojournalism in any conventional sense, but take the social essay form into almost novelistic territory.

From there it’s small geographic step, but a massive psychological leap to Bruce Davidson’s epic stories of the Civil Rights struggle. With their freedom marchers trudging through rain and crowds of jeering rednecks, these deceptively modest images take you powerfully to a distant place and time.

If the inclusion of photographers from other cultures might smack to some of political correctness, Li Zhensheng’s panoramas of the Cultural Revolution and Shomei Tomatsu’s studies of the impact of Americaisation on Japan compound the sense that these were extraordinary times wherever you were in the world.

Two of the photographers appear to move away from photojournalism altogether: Boris Mikhailov, with his provocative superimposed images, and Sigmar Polke, who pours chemicals over his pictures of bear-baiting in Afghanistan. Yet even as he complicates the viewer’s relationship to these disturbing images, Polke relates directly to the photo essays seen in classic photojournalistic magazines such as Picture Post.

The Malian Malick Sidibe, on the other hand, was a studio photographer in a poor African suburb, who made personal studies of the local youth, suggesting that the compulsion to document social reality is perhaps intrinsic to the medium of photography.

The curators’ reluctance to associate such developments with photojournalism is perhaps partly down to intellectual snobbery: the idea that a great image is degraded by an association with mere journalism. Well you’d hardly expect a newspaper critic to endorse that. But it is useful to shuffle the accepted categories, to blur the distinctions between functional photography and art photography, between work that’s commissioned and work that’s seen as self-expression.
