Safe from danger

Recently, a two-month-old baby girl was found dead in a crib at her home in Princes Town.

She was left there to sleep by her mother after a feeding. Her sudden death was reported to have been caused by positional asphyxia, a form of asphyxia which occurs when someone's position prevents them from breathing adequately.

Positional asphyxia occurs when the baby sleeps in an unsafe position causing insufficient intake of oxygen while breathing.

According to the experts the safest way to keep babies from dangers of Positional Asphyxiation is to lay them on their backs on a firm surface and to avoid letting them be crowded with soft objects like toys, dolls or blankets.

This can cause a build up of carbon dioxide in the surrounding air.

The bedding traps the carbon dioxide each time the baby exhales and the air becomes more concentrated with the carbon dioxide and the amount of oxygen in the air decreases.

If this happens over an extended period of time the baby can suffocate which can lead to death.
