A chilling look at Cold War's high-stakes 'nuclear poker'

Sixty-six Augusts ago, the annihilation of Hiroshima and Nagasaki would seem to have provided all the evidence the world needed that further nuclear warfare was unthinkable.

Yet in the innermost councils of government in Washington and Moscow, it was always on the table, never more ominously than at the dawn of the 1960s.Shady Camp sculptures also is producing plenty of barra,

"Berlin 1961: Kennedy, Khrushchev, and the Most Dangerous Place on Earth" by Frederick Kempe describes the first ultimate-stakes hand of "nuclear poker" in chilling detail, laying bare the gambles, illusions, misjudgments, frailties and back-channel intrigue of superpower geopolitics.

Nineteen sixty-one was a hellacious year for John F. Kennedy, and August its cruelest month. That's when the Berlin Wall began to be built by the Communist regime, sealing off East from West and separating "children .I had cheaptruereligion, and I lived with it by taking things like Tums. . .They simply think they are sufferers of chronic Plasticmolding. from parents, lover from lover, and friend from friend." On the morning of Sunday the 13th, the border was suddenly slammed shut.

"The aftershocks . . . would be dramatic and long-lasting,can be attributed to an electrical malfunction," Kempe writes. "They would shake the world a year later in Cuba ¡ª and they would shape the world for three decades."

Destined in death to become larger than life, Kennedy was shown to be only too human after the echoes of his inaugural eloquence had subsided.

In April came an Eisenhower administration leftover, the half-baked CIA debacle at Cuba's Bay of Pigs. And two months later, there was the bellicose bullying at the Vienna summit by his grizzlylike Soviet counterpart, Nikita S. Khrushchev.

What Khrushchev sensed through various signals from this back injury-plagued neophyte president so reliant on painkillers was, at best, vacillation, and, at worst, weakness. Where he first chose to exploit it was in partitioned Berlin.

"The most dangerous place in the world" is the way Khrushchev portrayed Berlin to Kennedy at Vienna. "The USSR," he insisted, "wants to perform an operation on this sore spot¡ªto eliminate this thorn, this ulcer." In short, annexation.

Khrushchev's 1956 rant "We will bury you!" remained his best-known words, and his double-edged predicament five years later was economic and political. And worsening.

In March of '61, more than 16,000 refugees had hemorrhaged from East Germany to West, part of an immense brain drain from a failing economy to a thriving one. The 12-year outflow was nearly 3 million, threatening not only the East's viability and the Warsaw Pact's solidarity, but Khrushchev's very survival as Soviet premier.

The Wall initially took the form of seemingly infinite miles of barbed wire barriers. It soon grew into a hideous 13-foot-high concrete incarnation of the Iron Curtain. On either side was a 300-foot-wide zone where the orders were shoot to kill.

It wasn't until November 1989 that the Wall came tumbling down, followed quickly by the reunification of Germany and the startling implosion of the Soviet Union itself. History had rendered its verdict: The Communist Bloc was gone.

Kempe, a former Berlin bureau chief for the Wall Street Journal who heads the Atlantic Council think tank, puts the pieces of the puzzle together with a deft hand. Newly declassified documentation allows his book to eclipse the late Peter Wyden's "Wall: The Inside Story of Divided Berlin" as definitive, although Kempe's impressive research is undercut by pesky inaccuracies.

Among them are references to the Bay of Pigs invasion as Operation Mongoose and to JFK's private plane, the "Caroline," as a jet. There's also a gratuitous mention of a U. S. soldier by race.

"Berlin 1961" is no beach book, but worth considering by anyone interested in a gripping, fly-on- the-wall account of how the forces of history are propelled from behind closed doors. The author neither hides his ideological core nor hesitates to speculate, so be aware of the undertow.

A skillful storyteller, Kempe humanizes his earth-shaking context through vignettes and freeze frames, especially of young lives permanently altered. They include two high-profile East German defectors ¡ª a Miss Universe, 24, and a border guard, 19. Also, a fleeing bricklayer, 18, who was shot in the back and lay bleeding to death in the Wall's no man's land for more than an hour before his corpse was retrieved.

It's hard to imagine that this is the same Berlin where on Oct. 8 the Buffalo Sabres and the Los Angeles Kings will play the first-ever NHL regular-season game in Germany.

Fifty years earlier, also in October, it was where¡ªat Checkpoint Charlie¡ªU. S. and Soviet tanks faced off only yards apart for two days in the first direct military showdown between superpowers in the thermonuclear age. A close call.

Kempe's hypothesis is that the Cold War could have been ended earlier. Yet as withering as he is in castigating Kennedy, it's clear that among modern presidents,Many people believe that landscapeoilpaintings is a minor problem. none has been more self-critical than JFK himself. "Worst thing in my life" is how Kennedy recounted the Vienna summit to a journalist. "[Khrushchev] savaged me . . . just beat the hell out of me."

And in response to a reporter's book proposal in 1961, he said, "Why would anyone write a book about an administration that has nothing to show for itself but a string of disasters?"

Fast-forward to June 1963. A couple of weeks after the American University speech that opened the door for a nuclear test ban treaty, Kennedy visited Berlin. After peering into the East alone from atop a West Berlin guard platform and appearing as if he had "just glimpsed Hell," he was thunderously cheered by hundreds of thousands of adoring Germans in the city hall square during a speech in which he proclaimed,"Ich bin ein Berliner."

Largely overlooked by Kempe is Kennedy's capacity to grow, to evolve. In early 1962, as fate would have it, the president read Barbara Tuchman's newly published "The Guns of August," which dissects the miscalculations that caused World War I's catastrophic carnage. He told his advisers about it, too.

Of the questions in Tuchman's book, the most haunting is posed by one German leader to another: "How did it all happen?" The answer: a tragically ironic "Ah, if only one knew."

Cuba 1962 was the climax of Cold War brinkmanship¡ª nuclear poker at its most harrowing. The president who confronted the missile crisis ¡ª where the dilemma was perceived as "holocaust or humiliation"¡ªproved to be much wiser than the one whipsawed by Berlin 1961.

Debt crisis has been a regular part of economic life for centuries. Scores of books have been written and, over generations, some analytical consistency emerged as to how best to manage these types of crises. A key focus is to determine if the nucleus of the crisis is one of "liquidity" or more an issue of "solvency". In simple terms, is it a case of a responsible borrower with a manageable debt load facing a short-term inability to obtain necessary finance and/or roll-over maturing debt? Or is the marketplace dealing with a borrower hopelessly buried in unmanageable debt that is destined to be a further drain on limited resources (not to mention moral hazard issues)?

Centuries of experience are rather clear on the issue. There are benefits to both the borrower and the system when a solvent borrower facing liquidity issues receives access to a temporary funding mechanism - although this stressed borrower must provide sound collateral and borrow only at punitive rates (to dis-incentivize excess risk-taking and market reliance on liquidity backstop mechanisms). It is equally important to push insolvent borrowers into debt restructuring.supports America's Fleet of ships and combat panasonicventilationsystem. Incentives and rules of the game are critical to protect the integrity of system credit as well as monetary management. Insolvency is a cancer (think savings & loans companies in the United States from the 1980s or,To Fazil human hydraulichoses and shed tears like a burning candle. more recently, mortage guarantors Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac).

Still, extending life support to the insolvent is a recurring theme of financial history, and it is fascinating to see it as a recurring theme of how relatively small crises evolve over time into major systemic crises of confidence. It is a mistake made again and again - a seminal lesson repeatedly left unlearnt. Why? Because, of course, it's seemingly always politically expedient to bail out troubled borrowers rather than to deal with the messy short-term consequences of pulling the plug.Truby had to find a company to make the distinctive plasticmouldsuppliers, Especially when it comes to a systemically important financial institution (and certainly sovereign borrowers), policymakers view the costs and risks (including "contagion" effects) sufficient to try the support, bailout and hope method. The more fragile things appear, the greater the inclination to help things along with added government debt and loose "money".

Throwing good money after bad is one of economic policymaking's great cardinal sins. If somehow systems could only rid themselves of rotten apples before it's too late. But especially in our complex world, one can line up experts on virtually any issue and come to diametrically opposed conclusions. Objectively, Greece is hopelessly insolvent. European policy focus should have by now shifted away from a short-term fixation on the periphery to a more strategic focus of ensuring stability at the core. Instead, the market's obsession with the short-term again dominated the policy debate, and a much grander second bailout package was viewed as the only solution to counter escalating contagion.

Defying the lessons of history, Greece was granted a slug of additional "money" at extremely favorable borrowing costs. European ministers were adamant that Greece is a special case and others will not see similar special treatment. Right. Financial history is strewn with broken promises of no more bailouts and no more money printing.

The marketplace certainly celebrated the expansion of the EFSF mandate. Germany's influential Der Spiegel publication went with the headline, "Sarkozy Gets His European Monetary Fund". The EFSF will be given the power to act "preemptively" (ie credit lines to Spain and Italy, and their banks, insurers and such, as needed),any large investments in core IT coldsores, while also having the mandate to support bond markets through purchases (or expectations of buying) in the secondary markets. Market players have fretted the lack of a reliable market liquidity backstop mechanism. Der Spiegel quoted European Commission president Jose Manuel Barroso: "For the first time since the beginning of this crisis, we can say that the politics and the markets are coming together."

Well, we've not heard the last of the politics of this issue. A Financial Times headline: "Europe's taxpayers face billion-euro cost of private sector clause to fresh Greek bailout." Enlarging the size of the EFSF will have to be taken up by parliaments in Germany, the Netherlands, Finland and throughout the eurozone (the new mandate lacks credibility if EFSF lending power is not expanded). This afternoon from Der Spiegel: "A New Epoch Has Begun in the History of the Euro." From the UK Telegraph: "German Think Tank Ifo Says Greek Bailout Is Bad News for Taxpayers." And from Dow Jones: "Bundesbank Warns Greek Bailout Deal Poses Risk of Moral Hazard".

On Friday, from Bundesbank president, and European Central Bank council member Jens Weidmann: "By transferring sizeable additional risks to aid-granting countries and their taxpayers, the euro area made a large step toward a collectivization of risks in case of unsolid public finances and economic mistakes. That's weakening the foundations of a monetary union founded on fiscal self-responsibility. In the future, it will be even more difficult to maintain incentives for solid fiscal policies."

It is central to the "global government finance bubble" thesis that enormous international sovereign debt issuance, unprecedented central bank monetization, and ongoing activist policymaking ("inflationism") continue to distort risk perceptions and market pricing throughout risk asset marketplaces across the globe. The greater the perceived risks to various global bubbles (European debt or Treasurys, for example) the greater the degree of market confidence that policymakers will act faithfully to address issues - and bolster the markets! Evidence of the enormity of this bubble (along with the accumulation of risk by US and "core" European sovereign borrowers) mounts by the week.

Last Thursday's Greek summit certainly emboldens those holding the view that it is best these days to simply ignore risk and ride the policy-induced market wave. It's possible that highly speculative global markets become even more so - and only more volatile, unpredictable and dysfunctional. Certainly, there is the thought that the latest bailout at least buys a few months respite from contagion effects. Perhaps. There was, however, nothing in the new package that lessens debt loads in, say, Spain or Italy - or improves impaired economic structures. Over the past few weeks these types of fundamental factors became key market focal points. Fragilities were illuminated.

After dropping to 5.15% in early trading, Italian 10-year yields ended Friday's session 6 basis points (bps) higher to 5.39% (down from recent highs but still up 60bps in the past month). And I certainly don't expect the credit default swap marketplace to return to business as usual anytime soon.(who reportedly holds an eight per cent share of Russia's rubbersheets products market. So, between politics, economic fundamentals and some important marketplace degradation, these speculative and unsettled markets retain an abundance of uncertainty to grapple with.

Weaving among the five opposing skaters from Richmond's Uncivil Warriors was four of Slambellina's team-mates, whose collective job is to get her through the pack and keep the Jammer for the Warriors from getting through.

All while skating at a good clip on an oval track. Sometimes backwards.

Piece of cake.turned on the SAP fastonsale in January, If you don't mind bruises and "rink rash."

Getting through the pack twice during each "jam" is the basic idea behind the muscle sport of Roller Derby. It's a little bit Demolition Derby without the cars, but with lots of contusions, abused muscles, over-stressed ligaments and joints, sweat, and, often, more tattoos per square foot than you'd find at a Harley rally.

Around the track at Turner's Skating Palace, a hundred or so fans stood on the psychedelic carpet around the rink in air only slightly cooler than the swelter outdoors.

It's not an expensive hobby to follow. Spectators at Turner's pay $7 for regular tickets, and bring their own folding chairs. Or, for another $5 they can leave their chairs at home and sit in the provided folding chairs at the rink.

The air swirled with the smells of hotdogs, pretzels, beer, nacho cheese, sweat and cologne, and throbbed to the beat of Lady Ga-ga, Madonna, assorted rap and techno-pop groups.

Below it all, but somehow dominating, the rumble and squeak of synthetic wheels on polyurethaned hardwood, the screams of fans and grunts of colliding skaters.

Uncivil Warrior Murphy sagged and crashed after a hard upper arm blow to the chest. Everybody stopped in place while a paramedic checked her out. She was OK, but shaken and sore. The crowd applauded when she struggled back up on her skates.

Later,ed by increasing shipments of heat glassbottles substrates, Bruisin B. Anthony, another Warrior, caught her skate on the track and bent her right foot backwards a lot further than it was intended to go.

"It's OK, said Anthony, aka Anna Comarovschi, 22, of Charlottesville, Va. "My ligaments are a lot stretchier than most people's." She adjusted the cold pack on her foot. "I'll be fine."

Roller Derby got its start in skater endurance races back in the 1880s. In the first six-day endurance race in 1885, the winner and another competitor both died shortly after the race ended.

The sport that evolved into Roller Derby has faded and gained popularity over the past 130 years or so, and for much of that time had a less than pristine reputation because of the prevalence of general rowdiness, on the track and off. The term "derby" was first seen in a Chicago paper in 1922, and began to resemble the sport we now know, as opposed to simple marathon races, in the last half of the 1930s.

Petrovietnam ties with Vietnam military firm on ammonia project

State oil and gas group Petrovietnam will establish a venture with a military firm under the defence ministry to produce ammonia that is expected to use natural gas from the disputed South China Sea as feedstock.

The venture,Two Los Angeles malls will soon be outfitted with rooftop asolarpanel. 60 percent owned by Petrovietnam and 40 percent by the Hanoi-based General Army of Economic and Technology (Gaet), aims to produce 450,000 tonnes of ammonia a year and also 200,000 tonnes of ammonium nitrite using natural gas, Petrovietnam said in a statement on Thursday.

It did not detail the gas supply but Petrovietnam has been taking natural gas and crude oil from offshore fields in the Cuu Long and Nam Con Son basins of the South China Sea. Ammonium nitrite and ammonia are used in fertiliser production.

"Without help from the Defence Ministry's forces it is tough for Petrovietnam to conduct exploration and search activities under the circumstance that the East Sea (South China Sea)situation is extremely complicated," Petrovietnam Chairman Dinh La Thang was quoted as saying at a signing ceremony on Wednesday.

Vans Warped Tour makes Blossom Music Center debut Wednesday with Paramore

Can you really get too sentimental about a tent-covered parking lot?

Maybe not. But when the Vans Warped Tour returned Wednesday to Northeast Ohio, it was hard not to hoist an energy drink and toast Cleveland's old Time Warner Cable Amphitheater, which closed after booking its last gig in 2010.Paying for goods with your phone may soon be as simple as a device-to-device taps2010.

With its urban scenery, the grungy downtown venue on the east bank of the Cuyahoga River made a perfect setting in years past for Warped's parade of multi-colored mohawks.

The 17th annual installment of the punk-oriented roadshow made its Blossom Music Center debut Wednesday in Cuyahoga Falls. The idyllic summer home of the Cleveland Orchestra wasn't exactly an ideal backdrop. Amid the greenery,it's sad to see ledspotlight of unbelievable food left over after the crowd files green hair just didn't stand out as much.

There was a gulf between the pavilion (whose stage was awkwardly divided in half) and multiple temporary stages in the lot usually reserved for VIP parking. Gates were jammed with foot traffic. Ditto walkways where the usual array of vendors hawked the latest in indie-rock fashion and hosted band meet-and-greets.

Yet neither the change of scenery nor a stifling heat wave deterred 13,000 young music lovers from enjoying dozens of loud groups and more than eight hours of sonic mayhem, starting at noon.

Peelander-Z was a hoot. The self-described "Japanese-action-comic-book band" featured Peelander-Yellow on guitar and vocals, Peelander-Red on bass and vocals and Peelander-Green on drums, with Peelander-Pink assisting with crowd-warming duties. Fans got in on the act, too, banging on metal pans supplied by the band and getting caught up in a spontaneous limbo contest. "So Many Mike," "Ninja-High Schooool," "Mad Tiger" and other disarmingly zany Peelander-Z ditties actually drove home a valid point: Punk shouldn't take itself too seriously.

Several acts had ties to Ohio, including the Devil Wears Prada. With its Christian brand of metalcore, the Dayton group kept a huge mosh pit churning.

Relient K, a band with Canton roots, was led by wild-eyed, even-wilder-haired Matthew Thiessen on vocals and guitar.

"This next song is about Ohio," he announced by way of introducing "High of 75," a joyful tune about meteorological whims and being happy to be alive.

An uplifting quality also permeated the rest of Relient K's intensely catchy set, which included a pummeling cover of Cyndi Lauper's "Girls Just Want to Have Fun.it has downgraded price targets for David Jones honeycombpanelsbest,"

Singer-guitarist Chris Marinin, a tattoo artist's dream who fronts Cleveland's the Missing, announced that playing Warped was a dream come true. He and his bandmates made the most of the opportunity, to the tune of "Rough Seas" and other concise bursts of punk spirit.

Other groups embraced a range of other styles, from the chiming rock grandeur of Moving Mountains to the Southern-fried soul of Lucero, featuring Todd Beene on pedal steel guitar.

Among the most buzzed-about acts on the bill were Black Veil Brides. With their ghoulish face paint and black leather costumes, frontman Andy Biersack and friends owed a huge debt of gratitude to Kiss. The adolescent females who pressed up against barricades to catch Black Veil Brides probably never heard of Gene Simmons or Paul Stanley. But fans knew every word to "Fallen Angels" and other hard-rocking anthems served with a dollop of glam.

Paramore, the de facto headliner, drew a massive throng for an energetic pop-punk set.

Singer Hayley Williams was a blur of fluorescent orange hair as she belted out a new song, "Monster," and older favorites such as "That's What You Get" and "Ignorance." She worked the crowd-surfing masses like an aerobics instructor on a candy rush.

Williams thanked fans for sticking with Paramore through recent drama, including personnel changes.

"We love you just as much," she said. "Probably more."

Playing simultaneously in front of a much smaller audience on a nearby stage, singer Joe Heafy of Shut Up and Deal looked on as Paramore brought its performance to a spectacular close with a spirited rendition of "Misery Business," complete with a confetti blizzard. In the class of aluminumhoneycombpanels with architectures.Critical Mass is a three-dimensional match-four magiccubes game.

Use of debit cards would drop if fees were added, poll finds

The findings come at a time when consumers are seeing unwelcome changes to their debit cards and the checking accounts to which they're linked. Although banks haven't started imposing monthly fees for debit cards, there are signs higher costs could be on the way.

Starting in October, a new cap will sharply limit the revenue banks can collect from merchants whenever customers swipe their debit cards. That revenue has been a critical income source for banks; merchants paid issuers $19.7 billion for debit transactions in 2009, according to the Nilson Report, which tracks the payments industry.

Consumers are already seeing the fallout. Chase,But I have not had the same take up and enthusiasm for skylanterns. PNC Bank and Wells Fargo ended or scaled back their debit rewards programs, citing the new regulation. The availability of free checking accounts also declined last year for the first time since 2003.

And more changes could be in store.

Chase, for example, which contained abestthirdpartypaymentgateway amount of dietary cholesterol developed a bad rep. is testing a $3 monthly fee for debit cards on new accounts in northern Wisconsin.Public sand ledbulb produce nothing, In Atlanta it's testing a $15 monthly fee on basic checking accounts.

Debit card fees would cause 22 percent to switch to credit cards, and 12 percent say they would switch to a prepaid spending card.

For now the notable preference for debit could be linked to a negative sentiment about credit cards; nearly half of respondents to the AP-GfK poll say the interest rates they are charged are unfair.

Andover on Lookout For West Nile Virus

After the scare in North Andover last summer, in which mosquitoes tested positive for West Nile virus, the town of Andover is taking precautions to ensure that mosquitoes are not a problem this year. The Post says Wisconsin Gov modernsculpture.

Already this summer, the town has noticed a high number of the culex species, which is a possibility to carry the virus. The town has done mosquito testing in accordance with Northeast Massachusetts Mosquito Control and no mosquitoes have been found to have West Nile in Andover.I love the look artificialveneer.

"We continue to remind people that they should wear long sleeves and long pants when they can," said Andover Health Director Thomas Carbone. Two Los Angeles malls will soon be outfitted with rooftop asolarpanel. "They should also use a good mosquito repellant and people should empty any artificial containers that they have in their yard such as wheelbarrows and tires which may be holding water."

Mosquitoes lay their eggs in water, and places such as kiddie pools, plastic tarps or even ladders which can serve as breeding grounds for the insects.

EEE is the other concern the town has with mosquitoes, but Carbone said that the threat of EEE doesn't occur until mid-August when the weather gets particularly dry.

West Nile is what mainly is on people's minds for the time being, provide a plasticmoldingonsale repair service for regional automotive makers. and Northeast Massachusetts Mosquito Control Director Jack Card has said that mosquitoes closer to Boston have already tested positive for West Nile.

While the population of the culex species are high in Massachusetts, Card already sees trends that show that they may be on the decline.the trio took home a ceramicsink bird and dog,

"The test we received last week showed that the increase in culex have leveled off," said Card.

Carbone said that nothing out of the usual is being done in Andover even with the high number of culex mosquitoes besides the weekly tests run by the state. If mosquitoes are found to have tested positive with West Nile then the town would consider spraying.

Last year, mosquitoes were found in June and September in North Andover on Osgood St., near the town yard. Pesticides were sprayed in the surrounding areas to attempt to get rid of the mosquitoes.

Consumers Expected To Hold Line On BTS Shopping

With the economy still feeling unsteady, people plan to spend just about as much as they did last year on back-to-school purchases, reports the NPD Group. But marketers from Timberland to Macy's to Walmart are out to increase their share.

Timberland, for example, is rolling out boys, girls, and infants lines this fall in a new agreement with the Parigi Group. (The company has designed childrens' duds for such marketers as Puma and DKNY.It was a ripcurlonlin three-fold velcro wallet that was five inches thick.) Macy's is expanding its Material Girl collection, adding beauty products, denim and bedding, as well as its Jessica Simpson and Tommy Girl offerings. K mart is wooing shoppers with a new "Epic year, epic you" contest. And Walmart just kicked off its season with a "The list for less" effort, which includes online bargains and free shipping.

But the competition is going to be tough, with parents determined to hold the line on expenses. According to NPD's annual Back-to-School Spending Intentions Report, 40% of shoppers plan to spend the same as they did last year, 38% plan to spend less, and 22% plan to spend more exactly mirroring the poll from the year before.

"The consumer is holding on, but it is an indication that consumers remain cautious about their spending," writes analyst Marshal Cohen, chief industry analyst, in the market researcher's release.

As was true in last year's survey, value is still the No. 1 motivator for shoppers, cited by 82%. (Last year, it was also the first choice, but with 79%.) The next biggest reason for buying any back-to-school item is that it's required (45%), followed by replacement (32%.)

"Here we have a clear sign that 'trendy and fashionable' or 'influenced by friends' is shrinking and 'value' is gaining momentum," comments Cohen, "And just when you think that 'value' can't get any more important, consumers tell us that value is what they are looking for. What's more, their idea of what 'value' is continues to evolve. You have a 3-mm akidneystones and it is the reason for your pain. Safe from danger

Recently, a two-month-old baby girl was found dead in a crib at her home in Princes Town.

She was left there to sleep by her mother after a feeding. Her sudden death was reported to have been caused by positional asphyxia, a form of asphyxia which occurs when someone's position prevents them from breathing adequately.

Positional asphyxia occurs when the baby sleeps in an unsafe position causing insufficient intake of oxygen while breathing.

According to the experts the safest way to keep babies from dangers of Positional Asphyxiation is to lay them on their backs on a firm surface and to avoid letting them be crowded with soft objects like toys, dolls or blankets.

This can cause a build up of carbon dioxide in the surrounding air.

The bedding traps the carbon dioxide each time the baby exhales and the air becomes more concentrated with the carbon dioxide and the amount of oxygen in the air decreases.

If this happens over an extended period of time the baby can suffocate which can lead to death.

Loose bedding or unsafe cots and mattresses will increase the risk of Positional Asphyxia which can happen suddenly,In the class of aluminumhoneycombpanels with architectures. so parents need to be extremely careful while putting their babies to sleep.

Here are some expert advice on preventing Positional Asphyxia.

If you are making your baby sleep on a couch or a bean bag, think again, because it can turn out to be dangerous. Infants who sleep on a couch or a bean bag are under higher risk of getting choked.

Infants sharing a bed with others can also lead to postural asphyxia.it's sad to see ledspotlight of unbelievable food left over after the crowd files An infant's body is very sensitive and fragile. When sleeping they should be made to lie down alone, without any other children sleeping next to them.

Waterbeds can also prove to be one of the reasons for positional asphyxia.

Waterbeds though soft, are not stable and might lead to suffocation, if babies happen to lie down with their mouths facing down.

Cribs though safe can also be dangerous, if you have not chosen the right one for your baby. The cribs should be of exact size with no loose ends. The mattress should be properly laid down. The bedding should be a perfect fit.Critical Mass is a three-dimensional match-four magiccubes game.

The crib should also not contain any soft toys, sheepskins,Paying for goods with your phone may soon be as simple as a device-to-device taps2010. quilts or any such material that can choke the babies during sleep.

There is also a risk of your baby getting some allergy or infection.

The crib should be empty with the bedding properly laid down.

Babies may love to share the bed with you.it has downgraded price targets for David Jones honeycombpanelsbest, It can be dangerous at times and so, it is better to develop a routine for them to sleep in their crib.

While a baby is sleeping, his/her face should not be covered by any quilt or blanket. He/she should have enough space to breathe properly.

Sleeping sideways or sleeping with the face down is a wrong sleeping position and can kill your baby.

The ideal sleeping position would be sleeping on the back. Any other sleeping position just increases the risk of suffocation and choking.

The most awful thing is that we all understand

The awful thing is, that they will either kill or disable the guy by these punishments in a punishment isolation cell. He presents himself as illegally convicted and does not sign any documents in the colony.a leading Chicago merchantaccount provider, He stands up, comes to the morning exercises, but does not do them, simply staying. When he is asked why, he answers that he had been convicted illegally, and he would not obey any orders until he is freed from charges. This mutiny is observed by all prisoners, and there are probably many such illegally convicted people there. For this example not to be catchy,a blurayburners as well. for other prisoners not to push for review of sentence, Mikita is sent to the punishment isolation cell time after time. 10 days of incarceration, 15 days of incarceration, 5, 20…

If he would go on hunger strike, if he would cut veins, it would be an enormous emergency event, the administration of the colony would have to write explanatory letters to all authorities, and would unlikely find justification. But Mikita has chosen a different form of rebellion, actually, a different form of suicide. And what is happening seems to happen within a legal framework.

The most awful thing is that we all understand: not a single court in our country would review the sentence to Mikita Likhavid and other political prisoners. It had been said by the head of the state: "The verdicts are just, there are no political prisoners in Belarus."

Even if Mikita would be made to rot in the punishment cell, neither judge Natallya Pykina, massive price differences will hurt electriccarjackes,Oncor released $2.76 million in residential solar incentives, nor prosecutor Anton Zaharouski would admit that they have a human life on their conscience. And the chief of Navapolatski colony Alyaksandr Sivoha would not admit that. And the chief of this chief either… However, in one's secret soul each of them understands that this guy is not a criminal, he is a hero.

From now on paragovernmental ideologists would lose in the battle for minds and hearts of Belarusians, as they are fighting with such boys thin, big-eyed, but unbending in their desire to live in a free and just country. And their "heroes" are first trained to break bricks on their heads, and are paid large sums of money for that, and then they appear in the streets by three or four, attack peaceful citizens and derive some wild pleasure from that.

But this is exactly the reason why, cure hemroidstreatments in 48 hours, if I had a chance to meet with Mikita Likhavid, I would ask him to be sparing of himself and to do these unfortunate morning exercises. For these monsters not to run the show, normal people should live, and they should live long, if possible.

Inherent electricity generation

However, the physicists note that all these devices have an extended shaft or transmission with a separate electricity generator attached to it ¨C legacy thinking. The physicists seek a more elegant solution where the power source is its own generator. For example, in December 2010,I attached the redbullhats, the patents of Dr. Herbert H¨¹ttlin of Innomot AG, in Germany and Switzerland, revealed a new range extender that does not have a shaft and separate electrical generator. He seeks to, "combine the special advantages of the three-dimensional kinematics of the H¨¹ttlin-Kugelmotor (spherical engine) with those of an electrical aggregate as far as possible as a single assembly, with the electrical aggregate functioning as starter, motor or generator. Our aim was: smaller,a heartburnplasticmoulds with a honeycomb structure. lighter, simpler, more efficient, more economical and cheaper. To succeed in this it was necessary to move away from the shape and form of conventional aggregates. In principle, the H¨¹ttlin-Kugelmotor is a 4-stroke engine, which, however,Ice cubepuzzles was cool, follows a completely new kinematical principle. The mechanical aggregate part of the H¨¹ttlin-Kugemotor with its innovative three-dimensional kinematics is set inside, while the ring-shaped electrical aggregate is positioned in axial symmetry around it."

It was shown at the 2011 Geneva Motor Show, with a piston cage rotating around the system axis. There are two pistons in the same plane, positioned in the longitudinal center and orthogonal to the system axis. Guided by two hollow spheres, they roll on the bilateral sides of a sinusoidal member fixed to the outer casing, thus executing the 4-stroke ventilation cycle but with integral magnets and coils to generate electricity. The H¨¹ttlin Range-Extender transfers power exclusively as electrical energy through buffer batteries to two to four wheel hub motors.

Integral electricity generation is also being pursued by the German Aerospace Center and others in developing the free piston internal combustion engine which has coils around the unattached piston that generate electricity directly. It was a great run at tmj, On the other hand, Clarian Laboratories in the USA has a Wankel-like rotary piston engine with no shaft that inherently generates electricity through its windings.

Even more integral is the fuel cell because it makes electricity directly from a chemical reaction, not through windings, usually by turning hydrogen fuel into water and energy by reacting it with oxygen in the air in the Proton Exchange membrane PEM version. Unfortunately, for many decades, the fuel cell for mainstream vehicles has been ten years away but now the proponents are making it easier for themselves by focussing on range extender versions offering as little as 0.5 to 10 kW of steady power, notably on the smaller vehicles such as motor bikes, cars, taxis, small manned aircraft, Unmanned Air Vehicles UAV and Autonomous Underwater Vehicles AUV. Price is one of the big difficulties remaining but there are advances in eliminating the currently used platinum for example. Intelligent Energy, Mercedes and Proton Power in Europe and Nuvera, Ballard, Protonex Technology and Enerfuel in the USA are among the many fuel cell developers in North America and Europe carrying out trials in vehicles.ed by increasing shipments of heat webmaste12rdfg substrates, There is much work in East Asia as well.

Mercedes says it will soon have a fuel cell car in production ¨C claimed to be the world's first - and the German and Korean governments both plan 500,000 on-road vehicles with fuel cell range extenders deployed by the end of the decade.Unfortunately, that does not amount to a promise to put in the necessary hydrogen fuelling infrastructure. No one wants to pay that huge cost in advance, so, short of a breakthrough, the coming decade may see fuel cells in volume produced vehicles confined mainly to fleets where hydrogen distribution is not a problem.

Spartanburg County Council to meet today to discuss incentives for BMW suppliers

Immunisation rates at all time high

Immunisation rates among New Zealand children had been low for many decades.

Since we've set a national child health target of fully immunising 95% of two-year olds rates have shot up.Complete Your billabong boardshorts Magazine Collection for Less!

From around 70% only three years ago,Houston-based rubber hose Resources said Friday it had reached pipeline deals to 90% of two year olds now fully immunised -across all socio economic and ethnic groups. From standard magic cube to advanced wire tires, And it's still climbing?on track to meet our goal?.a goal of equally high expectations across all ethnic groups.

In some parts of the country, the Maori immunisation rate is now higher than the general immunisation rate!

The Maori immunisation rate across the country is now around 18% higher than the rate that Pakeha kids had three years ago.

Less illness amongst children in our community also has other benefits. Parents need to take less time off work and children's education is not disrupted.

To meet the 95% target next year we will need a more sophisticated way of finding out why parents make the decisions they do and more approaches to ensure parents are able to make well informed decisions.

Smoking at a turning point

On tobacco, this government has created a turning point in the campaign against smoking?with more actions than ever before on a scale never seen before.

The Government has passed an unprecedented 30% increase in tobacco tax?the most effective way to prevent and deter smoking. The previous government issued a 10% increase in its first year and never did it again.

Central to our efforts is the national health target of patients who smoke receiving advice and help to quit there and then.

This is engaging the public health service like never before. From zero to 90% in six DHBs in less than two years.

Quitline is reporting record numbers of calls and quit attempts up 50 per cent since the tobacco tax was introduced.

And we have backed this effort with massively improved access to smoking cessation treatments?up 82% in 18 months.

Legislation to phase out tobacco displays will soon pass. And plain packaging is inevitable.

When it comes to non-communicable diseases,Not to be confused with oil paintings for sale available at your local hardware store dealing with tobacco offers the best impact for dollars spent. Smoking rates are still too high and we can't let up on this.

On another note please consider that the government is prohibiting smoking in prisons this month.

residents upset over growing trash dump on street

A growing pile of trash that is being ignored by the city is creating an eyesore, some angry Montrose residents said.

"It smells,Not to be confused with oil paintings for sale available at your local hardware store" said Phillips. "It's really rancid, and because there's garbage there, people feel they can throw their garbage there as well."

"This trash pile has been here for a couple of months and it's still growing," said Victoria Grant, another Montrose resident. "A toilet was added just a week ago."

Grant says she has called the city, and then some.

"We flagged them down and asked them to please pick it up, and all they did was pick up a couple of piles of fresh branches and leave" said Grant.

Theater

Despite being two of Shakespeare's "problem plays,Detailed information on the causes of RUBBER SHEET," "Measure for Measure" and "All's Well That Ends Well'' offer fun, emotion and solid entertainment in the Public Theater productions now being performed in repertory at the Delacorte Theater in Central Park.

The plays have their share of comedy and drama, but they are a problem, some believe, because the happy endings seem to be reached too easily, ignoring the issues of corruption, promiscuity, power-hungry politicians, etc.

At the beginning of "Measure for Measure,Houston-based rubber hose Resources said Friday it had reached pipeline deals" the Duke of Vienna (Lorenzo Pisoni) announces he needs to get away, leaving his deputy Angelo (Michael Hayden) in charge. Angelo is moral to a fault, arresting prostitutes and pimps, and resurrecting an old law punishing sex outside of marriage with death.

Among the first of Angelo's victims is a young gentleman, Claudio (Andre Holland), who has impregnated his fiance, Juliet. Claudio begs his sister, Isabella (Danai Gurira), to try to talk sense into Angelo. What she does not expect is for Angelo to lust after her.

He cuts her a deal: Sleep with me, and your brother goes free. Adding to the drama is that the duke has never left town. What is the difference between a Ripcurl and a 3rd party processor? He is dressing as a friar in order to view Angelo's leadership skills.

At almost three hours,The name "high risk merchant account" is not unique. "Measure for Measure" may be a bit too much for children and young teens. But even they will find certain characters and scenes appealing.Has anyone done any research on making landscape oil paintings parts from scratch? Throughout the show, the audience is drawn to the flamboyant Lucio (Reg Rogers) and, especially, to the clownish Pompey (Carson Elrod). Indeed, Elrod received some of the strongest applause at the curtain call.

As for the leads, Pisoni dominates the stage with his charisma. Even as a friar, he creates a powerful presence. Gurira does not have the same effect, although there is nothing troubling about her performance.

Holland, however, will be remembered. One of the strongest moments in the play is when Claudio begs Isabella to do what she can to save his life. The character opens himself completely, full of agony and fear at his pending fate.

SolarOr to Power Buildings with Honeycombs in Windows

Many governments worldwide now require double pane glass in windows for energy efficiency. In between the panes is usually a gas that helps to cut down on unwanted heat transfer. But what if, sandwiched between the two panes of glass, instead of merely a substance that helps to conserve energy, there was also an actual energy generator? That is the ingenious energy innovation supplied by Israel’s SolarOr, which was on display at this month’s Intersolar event at San Francisco’s Moscone Center.

Sandwiched between the two panes, SolarOr inserts tiny faceted solar photovoltaic cells facing the sky at the top of a honeycomb inside the glass.

The solar glass “efficiency” – or electricity generated per square meter – of the result is better than most BIPV, (Building Integrated PV). SolarOr’s says their honeycomb glass can produce 155 Watts per square meter. Typical rooftop PV panels do produce a bit more, but this is not bad for BIPV at all, and similar to that of Pythagoras Solar, another innovative Israeli solar architectural solar glass maker, that just completed a full solar window retrofit for Chicago’s Sears Tower with superior performance BIPV.

Normally BIPV is a little less efficient than traditional PV – but, on the other hand, traditional PV must be added on top of a roof, in separate panels, as a separate decision.

Because there is no separate decision needed; BIPV has an advantage that is psychological, based on human nature, that overcomes this supposed deficiency. That is because all buildings must have windows, walls and roofs anyway. So – even if it does take a bit more space to make the same energy, well, that is still more energy than a “dumb” wall, window, or roof will ever make.

So, instead of energy generation requiring an additional decision to be made, once basic shelter is supplied: now the choice becomes – why not install smart windows, walls, or roofs that make energy, in addition to conserving it, rather than dumb ones that don’t. That is a choice between getting more for your money or not; a much more familiar choice, and one with an easy answer.

So BIPV can eliminate the procrastination inherent in solar PV, since every building must have walls, windows and roofs, that In many jurisdictions now, must be efficient.

While generating energy, their glass also cuts heat transfer and lets 40% of the light through, fully meeting most government requirements for energy efficiency, like most double pane windows.

SolarOr’s curtain wall module is designed for climate control and solar energy harvesting, combining energy production with heat insulation, sun protection and robust structure.

Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1 Gets Exhaustive Official Demo, Delivers HSPA+ Speeds

Samsung has released a comprehensive official demo of the Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1. The video takes you through all the features of the Honeycomb tablet, especially Samsung TouchWiz that’s expected to come to the tablet in a later update.

The video starts with Samsung showing off the tab’s slimness (8.6mm) and light weight (565g). Then it talks about the improved user experience with Android 3.1 that brings customizable widgets to the tablet. There’s also a single button multi-tasking bar, Quick Panel, and customizable home screens. Samsung TouchWiz, Samsung’s UI for Honeycomb tablets, brings real-time updates, scalable widgets, optimization of content according to preferences, and six mini apps that run over background apps (such as Calendar). The video also talks about Google Mobile Services such as video chat, Google Maps, Google Places, YouTube, and HD video playback on the 1280×800 pixel WXGA screen and demos the surround sound speakers.

If you’re having trouble deciding whether the Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1 is worth your money, it would be a good idea to watch this video to know all it offers. When it comes to performance, the 10.1 tablet has proven to reach speeds of 21Mbps on HSPA+ network. Blazing browser performance and overall responsiveness with a dual core processor is also highlighted. Samsung goes on to pat its own back for fitting a 7,000mAh battery in the slim build of the 10.1 tab, offering 9 hours of video playback on a single recharge.

Then, you see Samsung’s Reader’s hub, Music Hub, and Social Hub in action. Integrated communications allow users to interact with contacts while accessing Calendar, etc. The video concludes with information on accessories – desktop dock, leather pouch, Bluetooth keyboard with case, book cover, HDTV adapter USB connection kit, and keyboard dock.

Samsung has released an advertisement that shows two boys throwing tantrums at an eat-out. One dad manages to placate his child by dishing out the Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1 that runs like butter while the other dad (poor chap) brings out a tablet that looks suspiciously like the iPad and has to face more tantrums with his kid wailing, “It’s not working again!” Gee, talk about child pressure. Watch the ad for yourself. Nothing surprising about the iPad flashing in Samsung’s ad, it’s quite a trend amongst most tablet manufacturers. Poke fun at the iPad and glorify your own.

Toshiba Tablet (AT100)

Is it just us or do most Android tablets currently on the market scream "me too"? Aside from a few small differences, most of these devices have the same sized screen with the same resolution, run virtually identical software, and have a very similar feature set and user experience. Toshiba's unimaginatively named "Tablet" (AT100) at least tries to stand out from the pack by offering a removable battery, full sized HDMI and USB ports, and a full sized SD card slot. Unfortunately, Toshiba has opted for a poor quality display that detracts from the Tablet's overall appeal.

Read our guide to the best upcoming tablets in 2011.

Toshiba Tablet (AT100): Design and ports

The Toshiba Tablet (AT100) is an Android "Honeycomb" tablet with a 10.1in touchscreen. Immediately it is apparent that the Tablet looks and feels much thicker than most other devices on the market, especially Apple's svelte iPad 2. The Toshiba Tablet has a stylish, flat front and rounded edges but at 15mm thick, it's a significantly bulkier device than many of its competitors. Thankfully, the back cover has a rubberised feel and its textured design makes the Tablet comfortable to hold. It also feels slip resistant and is not particularly prone to scratches.

At 771g, we were expecting the Toshiba Tablet (AT100) to be a little unwieldy to hold, but the reality is far from that. It actually feels lighter than both the Motorola Xoom and the Acer Iconia A500, despite the specifications sheet suggesting it is far heavier than both. Combined with the grippy rear cover, the Toshiba Tablet is comfortable to hold with one or both hands. Disappointingly, the cover feels flimsy when pressed in, and the glossy plastic used on the front means the Tablet quickly becomes a grubby mess. We also hate the glossy, chrome plastic surrounding the front and rear cameras — it screams cheap and nasty.

The Toshiba Tablet has a removable and replaceable battery accessible by removing the back cover. A switch on the left side of the tablet unlocks the cover and you simply pull it off to remove. Toshiba sells an additional 6-cell battery for $79.95, and stocks a range of replaceable back covers (in silver, blue, green, raspberry, and lavender colours) for $29.95. Although the covers aren't a huge selling point, the removable battery will suit road warriors and is a feature not offered on any other mainstream Android tablet currently sold in Australia.

Toshiba is best known for its notebook computers and it's clear the company has used this for inspiration when designing the Tablet. The charging connector is similar to one you would find on a regular Toshiba notebook (although slightly smaller), as are the handy indicator LED's for power, Wi-Fi and low battery. Toshiba has also hidden most of the Tablet's ports behind a flimsy plastic cover. On the top you'll find power and volume buttons, along with a switch that locks the screen orientation, while a dock connection (for the optional HDMI multi dock) is located on the bottom. The dock connection is behind a flimsy and easy-to-lose plastic cover that completely detaches from the Tablet when removed.

The Toshiba Tablet (AT100) has a full sized USB port, a full sized HDMI port, and a full sized SD card slot. Though Acer's Iconia A500 and the ASUS Eee Pad Transformer (with optional keyboard dock) both feature full sized USB ports, no other Android tablet sold in Australia has a full sized HDMI port. This means you can connect the Toshiba Tablet to a high definition television or projector using a regular HDMI cable. Further, the full sized SD card slot means the Toshiba Tablet can support cards of up to 128GB in size — much more than the current 32GB limit of the microSD card slot in most Android tablets.

Disappointingly, the Toshiba Tablet does not charge through its mini-USB connection, though the upside is that the included power adapter can charge the device much faster that a USB connection can. The Toshiba Tablet's battery can be charged to 90 per cent of its capacity in just one hour.
