Exclusive Behind the Scenes Look at His New Daytime Talk Show

The Jeff Probst Show, a new entry into the crowded daytime talk show field, has struggled in the ratings since its September 10th debut, but is starting to show signs of life. In this exclusive interview, Probst peels back the curtain on the inner workings of his talk show. He speaks candidly about the adventure of taking the show from concept to air, the pressure to achieve ratings, and his mission to create a show that stays true to his positive outlook on life.

The next thing that happens is they do a bunch of research to decide if people are interested enough to warrant shooting a pilot. Once we got the green light for a pilot, we had to hire a staff.

During this time (2011) I was in Samoa shooting Survivor so I was working on the talk show while executive producing and hosting Survivor in another country. I met Amy Coleman [Executive Producer of The Jeff Probst Show] over a Skype phone call. She was just wrapping up a long career at The Oprah Winfrey Show and was exhausted, but she agreed to come on board as a consultant for the pilot.

We had daily phone calls where we planned out the entire creative for the pilot without me ever meeting anybody in person. The Survivor schedule allowed for a very short break in between seasons, so I came home and we shot the pilot for the talk show, I hosted the live finale for the season of Survivor that was airing, and then went back to Samoa to shoot the next season. It was a very busy few weeks!

The next step is a group of sales guys go out and try to sell your show. Because the CBS daytime slots were already filled with hit shows, we needed a buyer. I flew to New York and met with every network head and pitched the show. It’s a funny process because you are promising something you haven’t yet shot and the sales guys are negotiating rates for a show that doesn’t exist.

I met Ted Harbert [Chairman of NBC Broadcasting] and immediately felt it was the right fit for the vibe of our show and fortunately he did too. So Ted was in, now we just needed some of the bigger NBC O&O’s [NBC owned and operated stations] to “Say Yes” as well.

We had a lot of very fast support from most of the larger markets, but it came down to Michael Jack [President and GM of NBC New York]. He was debating between a few shows, so I flew back out to New York to have one drink with him. In fact, he wasn’t certain he could fit the meeting in because of his schedule, but we flew out anyway, hoping it would work out. We sat at a bar and talked about the show for about 30 minutes and then he had to leave. A few days later he said yes and that gave us the clearance we needed.

At this point you just begin. You just start tossing out ideas trying to find your voice all the while aware of a calendar that is both friend and foe.
