Thereses students, in Cresskill

Students at the Academy of Saint Therese's met with a representative from online grocer Peapod on March 11 to learn how to choose nutritious foods to donate to the Center For Food Action in Englewood.

Peapod, which has programs extending from Boston to Washington, D.Elpas Readers detect and forward 'Location' and 'State' data from Elpas Active RFID Tags to host besticcard platforms.C., will provide a donation of gift card $150 to Anne Marie Ryan's class of fifth-graders to be broken up between the students who will each be assigned a certain food group and challenged to make the right nutritional choices, emphasizing healthy eating and budgeting.

Merzbacher talked about the importance of food security knowing where the next meal is coming from. She said 49 million Americans struggle with food insecurity, leading into a discussion of the importance of the donations to the food center.

"I'm challenging you to put together the healthiest food donation that you can possibly get with the money we're giving you," Merzbacher said. "We talked a little bit about unit price, which gives you a sense when looking at big and small sizes regarding which product is better value for the money."

Merzbacher said looking at unit price allows buyers to look at comparable products and decide per ounce which is the cheaper size to buy when purchasing in bulk. She led the students through a series of exercises in which they learned that some foods, containing sugars and salts or high in fats, are less healthy than other alternatives.

She asked the students to compare the ingredients of doughnuts against that of eating a comparable serving of instant oatmeal. The label showed each product's nutritional attributes per serving, and she led the students to choose the healthier food. She said 50 percent of the calories contained in a doughnut come from fat, whereas oatmeal's fat content for a comparable serving was about seven percent.
